Lost Easter Eggs: "the Shape of Things to Come"

Author: Groshan Fabiola

There has been much fanfare about Lost, its online cult following now more massive than ever. The most recent episode “The Shape of Things to Come” apparently brought to fore and emphasized the show’s highly dynamic and unpredictable character. Moreover, it has highlighted, perhaps more than all those in the past, how the show has not only changed dramatically in terms of content and breadth, but how it has veered away from its original course.

During its first season, Lost introduced us to a bunch of survivors of the doomed Oceanic Flight 815, subsequently chronicling their life (or death) on the island and how they would eventually get out of it and be saved. Later on, subsequent Lost seasons would bombard us with one surprise after another, each one more mind-boggling than the last. We would be presented with a host of phenomenon and characters which would dramatically change our simplistic view of the initially inanimate, humdrum island.

These startling and, some say, jarring and incongruent developments have led some Lost viewers to question the connection of the first season to the last, and comments have been raised on the impossibility of doing so. Continuity, logic, and soundness of plot, after all, are vital to any successful series. On the other hand, much has been said about the depth the first season has dedicated to exploring the very perplex personalities of its principal characters. As the storyline drastically evolved, therefore, questions have been raised whether the first season may have been necessary at all, if this is where the show was headed in the first place.

All in all, this is exactly what makes Lost so intriguing, because its first season laid out a solid ambiance of authenticity and realism, then it goes on to challenge them by incorporating science fiction elements to rattle viewers off their wits. Hence, it was more a change of degree than kind, as it just builds up to be more and more complicated, thus arousing the interest of viewers more and more.
