Vigee Le Brun´s Miniatures

Author: KIRCHER Christian

the question : did Vigée Le Brun make miniatures also and not only paintings seems to be resolved. Already two important written testimony exist , an english gentleman who affirms that he got a miniature painting from mme Vigee Le Brun as she did not have the time to make a big portrait. and the prince of prusse also got one. Now there is another testimony from the famous Troubetskoi family. Dara Troubetskoi who gave Mme Vigee Le Brun a warm wellcome in russia did got as a present from the zarine a miniature portait done by Mme Vigee Le Brun showing Marie Antoinette with a rose in her hand.
It seems to be a copy of the famous portrait in Versailles and is signed and dated by the artist. After the family history, the miniature painting was given by the king Louis XVI to the futur zsarine de russie when she was in france with her husband the crownprince Paul I.
She traveled to france under the name Contesse Severny. The Miniature painting went from Dara troubetskoi to princess menes Troubetskoi de Venise who gave it to Princess Alexandra Troubetskoi in Paris. Today it is in the CK Collection in france.
The written donation of princess Menes-Troubetskoi from Venice is also in the CK collection.
As the princess Dara Troubetskoi did order more than 5 works from Vigee Le Brun (Familyportraits) there is no doubt that this miniature is an original too. There are 5 more miniatures of Mme Vigee Le Brun in the Heremitage museum in St Petersbourg and an attributed "d apres" Mme Vigee Le Brun in the Louvre collection.
