Based on William Joyce's book 'A Day With Wilbur Robinson' this movie shows the life of young Lewis. A young orphan boy who has devoted his life to inventing, but lately his target is to find out who his birth mother was and why she had left him on the doorstep of the orphanage all those years ago.
After being rejected for the 126th time Lewis decides to create a memory scanner to see what his real mother looked like. He goes to the science fair to present his project and whilst there he is approached by Wilbur Robinson who tells him that he is a time cop from the future and to be careful of the Bowler Hat Guy who is out to destroy the past. Lewis doesn't believe him and his creation runs amok. Unknown to everyone in the science fair but Wilbur, the scanner was ruined by the Bowler Hat Guy.
He is devastaded by his failure and pleads for a second chance. When the science teacher says no, Lewis runs to the orphanage and rips up his invention booklet, scrunching up the memory scanner drawing and throwing it away only to have it thrown back at his head. He soon discovers that Wilbur had followed him to the orphanage to explain about the Bowler Hat Guy and finds out that he isn't a time cop but merely a boy. Dissapointed, Lewis goes to lock himself in his room and is stopped by Wilbur who begins pushing him to the edge of the building and pushes him off. Lewis is stopped halfway down by an invisible barrier which is Wilbur's time machine.
They take a quick ride to the future and Lewis is amazed at what the future looks like and that time travel is possible. Lewis decides to travel back to the past to stop his mum handing him over but crashes the ship. Wilbur gets angry and tells Lewis that he has to re-build the time machine. They go back to the Robinson household and put the time machine in the garage. There the robot Carl runs out screaming with Wilbur running after him. Lewis is left alone in the garage and soon meets the whole Robinson family. He is soon found by Wilbur and is quizzed about who he met and what he learnt.
The movie is continued with battles at dinner, against a dinosaur, against mind controlling bowler hats. And the Bowler Hat Guy reveals that he is a young orphan boy who had his dream of being a baseball star. The past and future are altered leaving Lewis in a very sticky situation where he has to use his wit and knowledge of his future to fix what he made happen. Who is Wilbur's father? And who is the Bowler Hat Guy? That you will found out in the movie.
The moral of this movie, a quote by Walt Disney is: “Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Also said by Wilbur's father: "Keep moving forward."
Even though his inventions kept on failing and ending up in a disaster, Lewis kept moving forward and created more brilliant inventions. Keep moving forward and never give up. You learn from the mistakes you make. Learn wisely.
