If you were born in April, you are sure to be aware of the fact that the diamonds are April’s birthstones. But do you know that the diamond is believed to possess magical powers? They say it improves ones abilities and contributes greatly to trust and love relationships.
Diamonds have also been known long for their curative qualities. In early times they were believed to be able to restore a person to health. Moreover, it was even thought that Cupid’s arrows were tipped in diamonds that`s why diamonds have become popular as gifts of love.
The white and luminous shades of a diamond indicate life, bliss and innocence. Diamonds, however, can greatly vary in colors – they can come in gray, brown, yellow, azure, red, and green hues. Before 15th century only representatives of royalty could allow themselves to wear this symbol of bravery and invincibility. In the middle of 15th century the Archduke Maximillian presented Mary of Burgundy with a diamond ring, which became the beginning of a diamond engagement rings history. The tradition of having such a ring on the third finger is possibly connected with the belief, which was popular in Egyptian times and which implied that the vein of love ran through this finger right into the heart. Ancient Greeks thought diamonds to be pieces of stars, which had fallen from the sky. Others saw diamonds as tears of God or water drops crystallized.
The beginning of a diamond has never been explained and is still a mystery to geologists. At first geologists considered India to be the primary river-bed source for diamonds. The antique Indians named the diamond Vajra which signified “lightening”. It was given this name due to its unbelievable strength and the light rays it gave out. To add to its virtues, we should say that it is also the hardest substance one can find on earth.
April, however, has one more birthstone and that is the opal. If diamonds are just crystallized carbon, opals come from deep within the earth where the extreme heat causes processes that result in this stunning stone.
