The Spoilt Child Who Became a God (chapter One)

Once upon a time there was a child who had enormous powers beyond even his own comprehension though where he obtained them was never made clear to any of those around him nor were the reasons for him wielding them. Naturally, those who accompanied him too had powers but not to equal his own though they too lived eternally as did he who they called “God” while they were referred to as “Angels”. Amongst these Angels; it was the one who was given many a name which stretched from “Lucifer” to “Satan” who was mightiest of all. The spoilt child was specially close to this one who though under him in power even surpassed him in devious ways of deception which in concert they would use to their mutual benefit and mirth.

All of those in the place called “Heaven” had a fondness for one another but none could rival the spoilt child and this special Angel; for what came between them was an understanding that needed not explanations to them for they were one of the same and were they differed they complimented one on another by possessing what the other lacked. This union would come to be vital as time surpassed in its relentless ways; in greatness that could not be accounted for by measure. This in contrast to the limited patience of the spoilt child that reached his with the angels he had created. Truth could be found that they were his friends and he could count on them to remain as such but yet were theirs was respect; worship it was not for what in him should requite it of them?

Had the spoilt child’s creations which were the Angels been handed too much strength that they needed not bow down to his every whim as he had originally intended them to or perhaps now desired them to? Was the case one that like he their time was unlimited and were not ones to require him to the point of feeling the longing to look up to in awe of what he was for they were not so much below him? Reasons, there might have been but this was not a matter as what was at issue in place was the “ego” of he who in error made his companions too much to his own strength. This leaving them no room for what he praised as truly being subjective to him. Regret was his; for in his desire to prove what he could accomplish. He undoubtedly had over played his generosity with these creatures which he now needed with argument more so then they did he. Long for them to kneel to him he did yet in all he knew he had not installed in them such notions as they even inhabited his home where they would do so for all time to come.

Sadness compiled with despair was what came over the spoilt child who had so much wanted to be all to those he created in having their adoration, fear of his judgment and so much more but in this he had been introduced to the failure of his own magnificence which witnessed him change to take up the ways of the egotistical, self-centered and aloof. All to an even greater extent then his past had known.

The spoilt child was one who defined the eternal meaning of what never could end for it had always been and would be. This however made him one who would and could not change or progress for doing so had a significance of moving forward which would have lead to a point which undoubtedly and inevitably would have lead to a conclusion that would have been a termination to not only himself but those that encompassed him. Stagnation was theirs of those in heaven as his was theirs and theirs was his for if the present does not alter; if it is always what be then and if it be such there can not be a future and without this ingredient the past also does not exit for all we contact is now. All this made a world where ideas where not new; for they had been played out and put on to practice but problematic this was for what could be the way to give raise to new as opposed to simply developing the already created.

The spoilt child’s knowledge was great for he knew all; with nothing escaping his awareness however his was the lack of progress in being able to make use of the facts he had stored in his mind that would have lead to wisdom. For though he was powerful there were certain realities which he could not change with one counting among them that wisdom only was to be taken and henceforth had by those who applied it in their experience but how could he accomplish this? To gain such which he wanted but feared for many a reason.

His might not be charm like he had only known to exist but pain and suffering but without crossing these bridges his destination would not be reached but above all their was a price for what he needed most. This precisely worded being mortality; a sacrifice of his immortality would have to be made for this experience of all the beauty of the senses would have to be made. All would be and could be his but only for time that be limited for when it was handed in eternity, appreciation was decreased as abundance gave less significance to what was to be had. If he tasted the food it meant he could hunger for it, if he had youth it left him with no alternative but to have its opposite and if his had known the joy of a begging that sees hopes arise; it like a top to a bottom where one can not be if there is not the other an end was bound to arise which strong as he might be he would not defer from himself. The flesh was what he lusted for but this too implied that it could wither; if his being should be composed of it though the touch of another might bring ecstasy like neither him nor those around him would ever experience for theirs were not bodies but spirits that had not a home that time or others could devastate.

Emotions, passions, ecstasy, yearnings, lust and all that was of true grandeur he was denied of as in him they had no use; for this was not a structure that he would though could have for where there was a front there was a back and he knew he could not have for himself what he truly wanted; as the result would be renunciation of the spirit he was which represented what would always be and never alter or progress. His dilemma, this was greater though for even if he could alter the rules and gain his goals without making his being wither; another complication it would create which Lucifer warned him of. If the spoilt child were to have his way and take joy from that which had become to be true grandeur; would not suffering be applied or emerge from him if he were to taste what was truly grand and have it snatched from him by its absence. Torture would be his to savor if true grandeur were to come and leave behind emptiness for true grandeur’s avoid after having entered would reach beyond even his eternity.

What options did the spoilt child have but to never gain what his fear of consequence would always deny him? If he could or would not dare then an idea was planted in him by his beloved Lucifer. Another group of beings would have to be created; who were far less powerful then himself or those around him, those who could never cause ill to him, those he could rule as he wished and even torture when his will or need for amusement called for it. Always under the pretext that his will was not leading them. He would have his worshipers, who would adore him and place him even beyond themselves though they would be but experiment to him whose height would sore so much above them that they would have alternatives limited to worshiping or be accompanied by the wrath he could not display on his Angels. Disposable they would be bearing the names of Humans while installing in them the trepidation of him which he overlooked for the ones he had created before.

Acoustic Guitar Tablature - is it Real Sheet Music?

As a beginner acoustic guitarist you're probably wondering whether learning your songs from guitar tablature is as good as getting them from "real" sheet music. Learning to play acoustic guitar is a great adventure which is sometimes spoilt a bit by the prospect of having to learn to read music. But for most acoustic guitar players, learning all the symbols and theory connected with musical notation is not really necessary.

Tablature for acoustic guitar has certain points giving it an edge over standard music notation. Actually historians tell us that tablature was used to record musical compositions long before conventional notation. They don't seem to have much idea how musicians attributed note values to compositions they has never heard played. Maybe it wasn't an issue in the sixteenth century.

So what do you learn from tabs? Tablature shows diagrammatically where finger positions are indicated using numbers representing the guitar's frets along horizontal lines representing the strings. The note G played on the first (thinnest) string is shown by the number 3 written on the top line of the tablature. Sometimes the person writing the tablature will group the notes together to show that they are all the same value but this is not a hard and fast rule.

Hammer-ons, string bends, pull-offs and other techniques are shown by symbols. Each tablature writer has his own idea of the best way to show how to play the music, and he usually includes a legend showing his symbols on each tab. With the aid of guitar tabs, you can learn new music quickly without going to the additional trouble of learning conventional music notation.

Despite the fact that tempo and time signatures are not included, sometimes it's easier for the guitarist to pick up music from tablature. The ease with which you can learn to read tablature means that your progress on the guitar is not slowed by the need to cope with such things as the use of alternate tunings.

Another bonus is in the ease in sharing acoustic guitar music on the internet. Guitar tab is easily written on a computer by way of ASCII code, which makes it easier to email or post on the web. Maybe when you get some guitar playing experience under your belt you could try writing some music down for yourself. A great chance to see the difficulties facing composers for the guitar. Unfortunately debate over copyright issues has made posting guitar tab a little bit contentious, but you can still share tab privately by email.

A lot of guitar teachers proclaim the virtues of learning to read sheet music. Some even think you are not a "real" musician unless you can read "real" music. If you have a burning desire to follow a career in music then the versatility given you by the ability to read music will be a definite advantage. But if you look at playing music as a way of each individual expressing themselves in their own unique way, then how you write your music down is not one of the biggest issues in your life!

Art is a reflection of our society and life and movies are often regarded as modern expressions of art. They make us laugh and cry and we often love to quote them. They edify us and enlighten us.

Every year numerous movies are made by the film industries but all are not liked. Some top the charts while others are kicked out of the box office. Some become the hot topic of discussion for the critics while the others just escape their notice. In short, some get a thumps up while others a thumps down.

But how many of these, which get a positive feedback, are actually good movies? Well, it is not that simple to answer, as it seems. The topic is very much subjective. What seems good to some may not be the same for the others. What appears enjoyable to a few might not be enjoyable for others.

Then what exactly is a good movie? To generalize it, we can say that those movies which are liked by the mass and not merely by some class of people, could be considered as a good movie. But what are the traits that are needed for a movie to qualify as a good one. First of all, a movie should provide good entertainment. There are of course others. Let us look at some of them.

A good movie should touch our heart and make us talk or think about it, instead of just being the means for mere time pass. It should have the capacity to teach and inspire us and provoke us emotionally.

It should be educative as well. It should be able to let us know about something new. Nowadays movies are considered to be one of the most effective educational tools used to teach or educate people regarding certain issues. In short a good movie should have some educative value for the masses.

A good movie must also provide some elements of encouragement and inspire people towards successfully overcoming barriers. Movies are regarded as the mirror of life. But this is not all. There are some other factors also which make a movie a great one. The following factors are important.

The Plot: This is the most important part of the movie. Without a good plot a movie fails to attract and retain the viewers in the theaters. Even if they were drawn to it initially for some reasons, people would lose interest sooner than later.

The Characters: The second most significant factor of any good movie are the characters of the story. Without them there would be no story and no plot. Characters should be such that the audience like them.

Actors: We need good actors to make a good movie. Actors, who can justify the characters and make them, come alive in front of the audience. They must be able to portray the characters well so that people say that the characters are made keeping them in mind. They should blend themselves into the characters.

Script: Without dialogues movies look dead. Script is the life of movies so it should be very strong and appealing. A good script can even make people come and see the movie repeatedly. Last but not the least is the visual display of a movie with beautiful scenes.

History of Oil Painting

In reality oil painting is a fairly new art style. Oil painting as a painting medium, the usage of oil in combination with other pigments counts back to 1400. Prior to oil painting, painting in general dates its history back to the period of stone age, painting in that era was made with the usage of binders unlike oil painting mixed with some kind of pigments like egg in tempera paints.

The fifteenth century was seen as a transitional period in Europe, there was some sort of reality visualized in art. Art was changing from the decorative style and mythological during a middle age to a period of revival and rebirth with the beginning of renaissance. There was a realization among the artists, they were beginning to understand the mathematical laws behind the outlook and there was a scenario prevailing where the artist were interested in portraying more sincere and portrays that were more realistic in nature. They had initiated the usage of nature as a source of inspiration for their paintings.

Jan Van Eyck (1395-1441), a painter of the northern renaissance wanted to mimic nature and its scenic beauty along with his painting brush on the board. He wanted to paint every tiniest detail on his board to portray his paintings to be more scenic and livelier. Finally he realized that if he had to portray every tiny detail of painting to his fullest satisfaction, he had to improve on the technique of painting. Thus with this zeal to portray tiny detail of nature with clarity he became the inventor of oil painting. Initially Van Eyck and all painters during the period of renaissance did not buy ready made colors. They grounded their pigment from natural sources like plants and minerals and in turn they added binder to form a paste with which they could paint. During the middle ages the binder which was used was egg and the end- product thus formed was tempera paint, this had the tendency to dry very quickly. This property of quick drying agent did not permit smooth transitions in shading. But smooth transitions were necessary to achieve as sense of reality which Van Eyck was attempting to portray. Thus he initiated the usage of oil instead of egg. The work with oil as a binder was much slower and accurate to the satisfaction levels. An oil binder permits to provide a glossier look. With this technique he was able to apply tiny detailing with the help of pointed brushes. Later the new technique of oil painting was appreciated and there was a general acceptance of oil painting to be used as a widely used suitable medium of painting.

Thus the invention of oil painting took place. They are very convenient sold in tube form, there are many other mediums of oil paintings available but we still adhere to the usage of oil painting invented by Van Eyck.

Norman Lindsay - Australia's Most Controversial Artist

Norman Alfred William Lindsay was born in Creswick, Victoria on February 22, 1879. He was a prolific artist, sculptor, writer, editorial cartoonist and scale modeller. His father was surgeon Robert Charles William Alexander Lindsay and mother, Jane Elizabeth Lindsay. He was one of ten children

Norman Lindsay is widely regarded as one of Australia's greatest artists, producing a vast number of works in different media, including pen drawing, etching, watercolour, oil and sculptures in concrete and bronze. His sumptuous nudes were highly controversial. In 1939, several were burned by irate wowsers in the United States who discovered them when the train in which they travelled caught fire. His original artworks are keenly sort after amongst auction houses and range from the rare but affordable etchings through to the elusive and expensive oils and watercolours. Lindsay was associated with a number of poets, such as Kenneth Slessor, Francis Webb and Hugh McCrae, influencing them in part through a philosophical system outlined in his book Creative Effort. He also illustrated the cover for the seminal Henry Lawson book, While the Billy Boils. Lindsay's son, Jack Lindsay, emigrated to England, where he set up Fanfrolico Press, which issued works illustrated by Lindsay. Lindsay also worked as an editorial cartoonist, notably for The Bulletin. Despite his enthusiasm for erotica, he shared the racist and right-wing political leanings that dominated The Bulletin at that time; the "Red Menace" and "Yellow Peril" were popular themes in his cartoons. These views occasionally spilled over into his other work, and modern editions of The Magic Pudding often omit one couplet in which "you unmitigated Jew" is used as an insult. Lindsay's creative output was enormous. Several accounts tell of his working practices in the 1920's. He would wake early and produce a watercolour before breakfast, then by mid-morning he would be in his etching studio where he would work until late afternoon. He would work on a concrete sculpture in the garden during the afternoon and in the evening write a new chapter for whatever novel he was working on at the time. As a break, he would work on a model ship some days. He married twice with his second wife, Rose Soady being his most recognised model. His first wife was Catherine Parkinson with whom he had three sons, Jack Raymond and Phillip. With Rose he had two children, Jane and Helen. Norman Lindsay died on November 21, 1969 aged ninety, His works are today held in private and public collections with a large number in the care of Australia's National Galleries. European Painting - an Outdated Concept

Europe has always been known for its cultural diversity, for being an entity forged by history and geography into a multiethnic and disparate whole, displaying a characteristic plural identity against a common backdrop. Hence, the vast diversity that the European continent has brought to the art of pictorial expression has been remarkable throughout the ages. The multiplicity in unity was the natural outcome of the relative isolation of the different parts and the tempering characteristic of having the same basic conditioning.

However, modern times tend rightly to use the term ‘European’ solely in its geographical sense, at the expense of the more subtle reference to that conglomerate of differing sensibilities and values distinguishing the old world in earlier times. After having watered down national and regional ties as determining causes for the creative act, it is but natural that the tendency moves on to a continental scale.

We may consider that this semantic evolution has entered its terminal phase as we advance into a largely harmonized 21st century. The ongoing extinction of the cultural sense of ‘European’ saw its beginnings in the 1960’s and has gained momentum ever since. Media, flux and migrations transform the world into a mono-cultural society where geographical origin ceases to be a diversifying factor. In fact we are inevitably moving ahead, not only towards the end of European diversity, but towards the end of cultural diversity in general. This evolution is certain to be accomplished during the decades to come.

We can remain neutral as to the worth of this evolution and yet clamour with reason that our interest in art, as expression of human perception and sensibility , is doomed to diminish at the rate that standardization, reproduction, simplification, streamlining and machine language take hold.

This makes pre-1960’s art all the more interesting. Not from a nostalgic point of view but simply for showing us the potential for variety. In the works of those times we are facing familiar yet puzzling manners of viewing a world whose diversity is still astonishing and above all stimulating. From that point onwards, the art world fell largely into repetition, make-believe and navel-staring. And most dramatically, the extension of the domain of art to include everyday trivia made the notion of art itself nonsensical.

For European painting, the subtleness of viewpoint, coming from a geographically small but still highly dismembered whole, created optimal conditions for innovation and creativity. Encounters with differently formed sensibilities brought dynamism to individual work, akin to the beneficial ‘melting pot effect’ that New York City enjoyed after the second world war thanks to a highly multicultural population. It is no wonder that the very last really creative acts of the abstract movement, and as such of the modern art movement as a whole, took place in such circumstances.

An international style has emerged, supplanting old concepts of regional schools and national manners. As everything went global, so did inevitably art. In the recent revival of painting this evolution is striking. Nothing in contemporary painting will make a particular cultural reference evident. For some time already, cultural precisions such as ‘European’ or ‘American’ have become meaningless.

The method of creating and promoting film stars in Hollywood movies is known as the star system. Different studios would select talented actors and create roles for them, often inventing new names and even new backgrounds. Stars that went through this star system in Hollywood movies are Cary Grant, Joan Crawford and Rock Hudson. Star system of Hollywood movies puts an emphasis on the image rather than on real acting talents. However, acting, voice, and dancing form a part of the criteria.

There are rules and restrictions that these new budding actors have to follow. For instance, they are not allowed to leave the house without putting any makeup and wearing stylish clothes when it comes to female actors. On the other hand, the male actors are expected to be seen in public as gentlemen. The star system of Hollywood movies had a morality clause as well.

Just as the executives, public relations staffs, and the agents worked together with the actor to create a star character, so also they would work together to cover up the incidents or lifestyles which would prove disrespectful and that can damage or spoil the image of the actor in the eye of the public.

In the star system of Hollywood movies, performers are not identified in films due to two main reasons. One is that the stage performers were embarrassed to be seen in films. Initially, they were featured in silent films and it was considered pantomime, which is the art of conveying emotions, actions, and feelings, by gestures without speech. As one of the main skills of actors was their voice, they were afraid that appearing in films would ruin their reputation.

The other reason for the performers not being identified in films was because producers feared that actors would gain more prestige and power and the stars might demand more money. There were many incidents that have caused the star system of Hollywood movies to come into existence. Some of the main reasons can be traced out from the following incidents.

Thomas Edison and the Motion Picture Patents Company (in short the MPPC) forced the filmmakers to use their equipment and follow their rules, since they owned most of the patents of the motion picture equipment. And it is said that the MPPC did promote some actors during that time.

There was a change in the star system of Hollywood movies, and the main reason was that the public desired to know the real names of the actors. Film audiences constantly recognized a number of performers in movies that they liked. As the names of these stars was not disclosed, the audience would give them nicknames such as the Biograph Girl, Florence Lawrence, and the like.

The MPPC was gaining control over the movie industry until Carl Laemmle promoted the first film star. He was independent of the MPPC and used star promotion to fight the MPPC gaining control over the film industry. First on the list is the 'Step Brothers'; this is one of the most anticipated movies, and is scheduled to be shown in July 25. It is a comedy film starring Well Ferrell, John C. It features the story of two individuals: Brennan Huff (played by Will Ferrell) and Dale Doback (played by John C Reilly) who have one thing in common-- they are both lazy, unemployed individuals who still live with their parents. When Dale's father and Brennan's mother marry and move in together, it turns the overgrown boys' world upside down. Their narcissism and insane rivalry pull the new family apart, forcing them to work together to reunite their parents.

Another movie that is to be shown on July 25 is the 'X-Files: I Want To Believe'; It is a stand-alone story in the tradition of some of the show's most acclaimed and beloved episodes, and takes the complicated relationship between Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) in unexpected directions. Is the Latest Batman Movie – the Dark Knight Any Good

Is the latest Batman movie – The Dark Knight any good. Well, if the box office is anything to go by it can’t be all that bad! For my money, it’s simply the best, most original Batman movie so far. Batman The Dark Knight is a careering behemoth of a blockbuster. It carries on from the re-modelled Batman Begins and finds Bruce Wayne (he’s Batman you know), played by Christian Bale battling with his old adversary the Joker played by Heath Ledger. Of course, the original movie Joker was played fantastically by Jack Nicholson, but if you prefer your villains darker and certainly more sinister then you are going to love Ledgers portrayal – oh and look out for Two Face as well. The only unfortunate thing about Ledger is that, for obvious reasons, he won’t be able to play the role again – internet source have suggested that Johnny Depp might take over the role in future outings – I for one would love to see that!

Batman The Dark Knight also introduces a lot of new cool Bat-stuff to us. Batman has a new vehicle called a Batpod. Within the film it is actually a detachment from the Batmobile (now called the Tumbler) after that vehicle is catastrophically damaged by an RPG fired at close range by the Joker. Batman also has a cool new Batsuit. The original BatSuit was changed both for story and production reasons. During the production of Batman Begins, Christian Bale and the stunt men were constantly in danger of overheating because of the type of foam latex used to create the suit, so the new suit is made of polyurethane; it's a lot cooler and more durable, despite being eight pounds heavier.

So what about the villains? Well, obviously there’s the joker – played magnificently by Ledger. He treats a stunningly staged bank robbery like his private video game with accomplices in Joker masks, blood spurting and inevitably only one winner. This Joker is a million miles from Jack Nicholson's funny role the Batman movie. This Joker is a mad shadowy figure and Ledger doesn’t wear any of the all too common prosthetics to make his character come alive; his face is caked with mouldy makeup that highlights the red scar of a grin, the grungy hair and the yellowing teeth of a hound fresh out of hell. As the Joker says, "What doesn't kill you makes you stranger." But if you think he’s bad – just wait till you see Harvey Two Face – this guys on another planet – but I’ll leave that one for you to find out for yourselves!

So, there you have it Batman The Dark Knight has it all. Fast action, great gadgets, deep, sinister characters and an ongoing struggle between the forces of darkness and .. well more darkness really. What more could you want?

So is Batman The Dark Knight and good – you betcha it is, as they say, if you don’t see another film all year – make sure you see this one!

Blogs provide the reader with current news and content rather than some of the out of date and stale content that may appear on a lot of websites. If you are a musician or have your own band then starting a blog could help promote your music. Band Promotion is difficult enough and this is just one way to help in promoting your band.

Blogs also rank highly in the search engines for a number of reasons, most notably for their current and relevant content. There are, however, several key elements to creating a successful blog about your band or music as outlined below. You are competing with thousands of other bloggers within your subject area of music so you need to be different and follow each of the key steps as outlined.

Do your research! You must know what is already out there in terms of competition. You can do this by typing in your blog subject matter into the search engines and seeing what appears in terms of blogs. Also, search the many blog directories to see who is already writing about your topic of interest. Use the Google keyword search tool to see what people are searching for each month in relation to your topic. For example, you would be best suited to focus on a topic that people are searching for and attracts more than 50,000 searches a month. When it comes to music, you could write about band promotion which has over 70,000 searches for these keywords each month. Reforming At The Mouth: The Rise Of The Lost Bands

With dance music evidently experiencing a recession and rock music going through somewhat of a renaissance, the time for old rock groups to reform is nigh. Recent years have seen past giants make a come back to the live circuit - groups such as Genesis, The Sex Pistols, Take That (more crock than rock) and even Rage Against the Machine.

So why reform when you have decided to split? Some say money, whilst others declare they "missed the camaraderie" of being in a band. Last year, Phil Collins announced a summer of live gigs with his band, Genesis. He stated the reason for the comeback was not for monetary issues as Mark Sutherland of Billboard Magazine suggested. "We're all loaded enough not to worry about where the million or two is coming from" said Collins before adding "If money were the issue, we'd be playing more than 20 shows. I just felt now was the right time."

Bands seem very cagey when reporting the reasons for their comeback. Sutherland has put it entirely down to money; "In most cases, these people can make more money in their old band than they can doing whatever they're doing now."

Never has this statement been more true than when considering nineties boy band, Take That. In 1996, the group went their separate ways to work on solo projects. Unfortunately for them, their solo projects didn't get them too far.

Gary Barlow released an album which was an instant success. He enjoyed two number one hits in the UK charts before releasing his second album, Twelve Months, Eleven Days. The second album didn't fare as well and so the ex pin-up was dropped from his label.

Similarly, Howard Donald (the long haired one) attempted to launch a solo career. For whatever reason, the fruits of his loins were never released to the general public. Instead, Donald went back to his DJ-ing roots and became a success in both Germany and England. Is there any connection between his choice of career and Take That's reformation? I think so.

Jason Orange failed to do anything of any significance after the split whilst Mark Owen's highlight was probably winning Celebrity Big Brother in 2002 (and I think we all know why celebrities go on reality TV shows). Perhaps the boys would have been a bit more of a success if they had left with Robbie Williams, a year previously.

With all this in mind, Take That did make a resounding comeback with new material, live shows and a wealth of awards to boot. It appears that Sutherland's opinion is in fact correct.

Johnny Rotten (John Lydon), front man for punk legends, The Sex Pistols openly admitted that "your money" was the reason for their revival back in 1996, but then Lydon has never been afraid of upsetting the masses with his sneering rants. Filthy lucre has never been a more appropriate term.

Perhaps the biggest shock to fans in recent years was the announcement that rock/rap pioneers, Rage Against the Machine were reforming for a number of live shows, apparently in response to the "right wing purgatory" that is the George W. Bush regime. The reason this move was such a shock was due mainly to the band's original split in 2000. Zack de la Rocha, front man for Rage gave the following statement:

"It [their decision making process] is no longer meeting the aspirations of all four of us collectively as a band, and from my perspective, has undermined our artistic and political ideal."

So, for a band that felt that they were not being heard anymore, it seems a little unrealistic that their sole interest lies in the political message of their music. A little extra cash, it would appear, always helps the world of a rock star go round.

Various woods and hides were used depending on the Indian tribe and where they were at geographically, but the most used materials were pine, and goat skin. These days, Native American hand drums are made using a variety of animal hides, but traditionally, goat skin rawhide was the preferred skin because of its stretching ability and sound quality.

Today, you can easily find Native American hand drums online and in stores that specialize in southwestern and American Indian home decor. When mixed with water, it produces a rich orange red dye that is much like paint and is indicative if the surrounding hillsides and rock formations like those of the beautiful Arizona red rock canyons. The region of Sedona is thought to be a special place with spiritual power like the energy created by American Indian drums.

The goal of Native American Education except for those Indian boarding schools that have tried to stamp out Native culture has always involved the sharing of beliefs through music, songs, stories and legends. It is in harmony with these forms of learning that the communication and cultural importance has been found in the use of drums. If you are interested in the spiritual aspects of life as pertain to Indian beliefs, you would enjoy using and playing Native American drums.

X Files: I Want To Believe Movie Review

So what is it that I want to believe? This summer's release of the second installment to the X-Files movie has been highly anticipated? I'm sure it has been for all of the diehard X-Files fans, but honestly, I then see very much buzz about the movie coming out. Especially up against the release of the smash hits the Dark Knight, and Iron Man I was wondering who really remembered what the X-Files was about.

Now I do have to admit that I am not an X-Files and and I did not watch the show on TV, but I did see the first movie.

Now, talking about hype, this movie was very tightlipped, very hush-hush and industry really pushed to try to get people really buzzing to try to find out what was going on with the next installment? the thing is, if you're going to be this hush-hush about a movie and really try to create a buzz around it but you better deliver... And this X-Files episode, though stocked with lots of special effects and here he sets, pretty much comes up empty handed.

The second X-Files movie following The X-Files: Fight the Future a decade ago, though not a sequel, is really just a hodgepodge of different storylines. It's as if the moviemakers were trying to please everyone and in trying to do so disappoint all.

Under the direction of the television series creator Chris Carter, is Gillian Anderson who called back to duty as sixth sense sleuth Dana Scully, and she doesn't disappoint. David Duchovny as her somewhat dazed and confused reluctant partner Fox Mulder barely registers as a dramatic force here, though it's clearly not his fault. Both actors do a great job, but acting alone can save a movie that's poorly put together and one shouldn't have to hold the movie a by the two stars alone.

The story begins rather promisingly with a nocturnal sequence, set in a snowy West Virginia town, and the capturing of a young, innocent woman by a creepy man driving a tractor. Meanwhile, hundreds of FBI agents are following Father Joseph Crissman (Billy Connolly), a strange psychic, sporting long white hair and thick glasses, who tries to illustrate his visions and redeems his shady past by taking the agents to the scene of the crime. However, this is where it ends.

This movie is tangled and disjointed with cheeseball special-effects designed just to get a quick scare out of you. If you like sitting through two hours of confusion, disjointedness, and question marks, and this movie is just for you.

Many fans are wondering what happens with Mulder and Scully, but that is something you need to see for yourself in the movie. We can't let the spoiler out here.

The sad thing is that is seems like Fox didn't want to believe in the movie either, as the budget was cut in the making of the film, and it feels like the movie was quickly slapped together. The movie is a stand alone, as it doesn't rely on any of the episodes from tv like the original movie did.

But, if you are going to see this one, you really have to want to believe it's going to be good.

WALL-E: Film Fun With A Fire Extinguisher

This summer, the must-see film for UK children of all ages will be Disney Pixar's new film, "Wall-E". This animated masterpiece is the charming story of Wall-E, the last robot left clearing up the Earth's accumulated rubbish long after the last humans have cut and run. Even after 700 years of scooping and crushing endless heaps of discarded trash, Wall-E is curious about the items he finds in the garbage.

In one scene, he discovers a discarded fire extinguisher which 'blows him away' - and another he finds in a spaceship escape pod provides a novel form of transport...

On the official Wall-E website, children can play the 'Space Escape' game, propelling Wall-E through space using a CO2 fire extinguisher for propulsion. (This is available on the Disney site in the Disney Pictures Wall-E section where you click on the Games tab top left, and choose 'Space Escape' for the game, or to see the film clip, click on the Videos tab and scroll down to 'Space Walk')

Unfortunately, some children have a habit of taking aspects of their favourite films a little too literally. For example, after the release of the Pixar animation film "Finding Nemo", there were reports of children 'liberating' pet fish down the lavatory to swim to the sea, just like the hero clownfish, Nemo.

So, if Wall-E has fun with a fire extinguisher, it is likely that children will be tempted to copy their robotic hero, and find out more about these objects they see everyday of their lives at school, in public buildings, and even in the cinema itself! For UK businesses, schools and homes, it's time to secure all crucial items of fire safety equipment from curious humans of all ages. Luckily, it's easy to keep your fire extinguishers safe from little (and not so little) hands.

New extinguishers are often lighter and more efficient, and with the rising cost of transporting old extinguisher to and from a refurbishing factory, cheaper too.

All old fire extinguisher and the majority of their contents can easily be recycled. Simply take any old fire extinguishers to your nearest civic amenity site (local dump), where they will be safely stored under lock and key before being taken for recycling. All fire extinguisher canisters are emptied, and pressure tested, and if sound, will be reused along with refurbished valves, pipes and fittings. If not, their metal cylinders are recycled.

Never discharge an old extinguisher unless you need to; old but safe extinguishers can be used for fire training for staff, before being recycled.

So, keep your fire extinguishers safe this summer from would-be Wall-Es, with fire extinguisher anti-tamper seals, secure fixings and protective fire extinguisher covers. Also, please dispose of any old fire extinguishers safely. And yes, you'll love the movie too!

Acoustic pianos have been around for about 500 years, giving the piano a long history of providing music. Despite numerous attempts to create an instrument that involved strings and a hammer, Bartolomeo Cristofori was the one who is credited with actually inventing the first acoustic piano.

The First Pianos

Cristofori built several pianos, but no one is precisely sure of when the first was created. We do know that the Medici family had one of the pianos in 1700, and evidence suggests that it was built in 1698. These early pianos were quite different from those of the modern music world, but they were a truly great invention for their time.

The difficulty with pianos was that the hammer needed to hit the wire, then return to its original place without bouncing and yet be ready to go again within moments. This was finally achieved and Cristofori managed to find a way to create this effect.

The Growing Popularity of the Piano

Despite his hard work, Cristofori was not able to make his new instrument famous. Then, in 1711, a diagram of his design was distributed and more people began to build pianos. One of them was a man named Silbermann who added the first damper pedal to enhance the sound. It was he who showed Bach his first piano, though Bach decided he didn't like it at the time and only showed interest much later, once
the instrument was refined.

In the 18th century, the Viennese began to construct pianos. These were built differently, with dual strings for the notes, leather covered hammers and elegant wooden frames. The keys were the opposite colors of today's pianos, with the regular keys being black and the others white. Mozart used these Viennese pianos to compose his music at the time. These are now referred to as fortepianos, to differentiate them from the modern piano.

Modernization of the Piano

As the Industrial Revolution made new technology available, it became possible to build pianos with heavier strings, made of stainless steel, for a fuller, stronger sound. The size was also amplified, making it possible to have seven or more octaves, as opposed to the original five or the fortepiano.

Broadwood was the first company to build these more complex pianos, though the Viennese piano makers quickly followed suit. It wasn't long however, before France got involved in the creation of bigger and better pianos. In 1821, Erard began to manufacture the pianos that would be used by the likes of Chopin.

This is also the time when the double pilot action was invented by Sebastian Erard and incorporated into the grand piano, making it possible to hit a key again even if the hammer had not yet returned to its place. This mechanism is used to this day in grand pianos.

Modern Piano Innovations

The modern piano uses a soundboard and a metal frame that allows for heavier string tension resulting in stronger sound. This has allowed for string tension of up to a combined 20 tons, something that never would have been possible in the earlier wood frame pianos.

In 1826, the usual leather covered hammers were replaced with felt covered ones by Henri Pape. This allowed for more uniform sounds and the ability to experiment with different hammer types.

A few years later, in 1844, Jean Louis Boisselot introduced the sostenuto pedal which made drastic improvements to the piano sound quality. Around this time, there were experiments being done with the methods of stringing the piano. Eventually, a new method was developed that involved three strings per note and a special double level soundboard to allow for the fit of longer strings.

The piano has come a long way in the past 500 years. From a simple, soft instrument that was a novelty to a strong and very popular one, the piano has really come into its own.

The piano has come a long way since it's invention 500 years ago. The original version has now been replicated and improved countless times, resulting in a large number of different piano styles and with the latest technology, digital pianos have cropped up and become a popular alternative. But which one is right for you? That depends greatly on what you intend to do with your piano playing and what your budget is. However, there are many pros and cons for both sides.

Acoustic Piano

The acoustic piano is a complicated structure. Touching the keys results in a hammer hitting a string, which then vibrates and the sound produced is amplified by the piano`s soundboard. This provides a rich, true piano sound, which is quite valued at concerts and recitals. However, an acoustic piano requires a lot of space, upkeep and money.

Things to Consider When Choosing an Acoustic Piano

- Acoustic pianos need regular tuning, particularly if there are changes in the weather or if the piano is moved.

- Nothing compares to the full-bodied sound provided by an acoustic piano.

- These pianos allow the artist to play softly or loudly, depending on the mood of the piece . . . the piano responds to the touch of the pianist.

- Acoustic pianos are large, weighing between 450 and 1,000 pounds and take up a large part of a room.

- Affordable acoustic pianos are usually wrought with flaws and not worth buying . . . but for many, a true, good quality one is simply beyond their budget.

Digital Piano

A digital piano is one that is a replica of an acoustic piano. Rather than contain the strings and mechanisms to produce the sound, digital pianos just use recorded notes from a real piano. There are definite advantages to using one of these instruments and they are often used by bands who need an easily portable instrument, but there are definite down sides, as well.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Digital Piano

- Digital pianos are considerably cheaper than acoustic.

- There is very little sensitivity in the digital key, meaning that true interpretation of many piano pieces is simply not possible.

- Some piano teachers will not teach students who only have access to a digital piano.

- These instruments are quite light and portable, some even come in their own carry bag.

- A high end digital piano offers a wide range of styles and features, including drum tracks and recorded notes from a variety of other instruments and types of pianos.

- Digital pianos don't need to be tuned, making them very useful in humid areas or where the weather changes drastically.

The debate of traditional acoustic pianos vs. digital ones has been around as long as digital pianos. Classical piano students insist that an acoustic piano is the best and to be honest, the digital piano is only an imitation, albeit a very good one these days. Even with the best technology, digital pianos are simply not able to live up to the original acoustic.

However, this doesn't rule out digital pianos completely. They are still extremely useful for the piano student on a budget or for anyone who has little space in their home for a large acoustic piano. Bands also find the more portable version to be easier to use, since it doesn't require tuning and can easily be packed up and moved to the next gig. In the end, it depends on your intent, as well as a few other factors, such as budget and space, as to whether or not you will go with an acoustic or a digital piano.

Piano Lessons in PDFs With Embedded Audio & Video Are Here to Stay

Does anyone still doubt that the Internet has deeply changed practically every aspect of modern life? Even people who usually resist technological change have to admit that this is true, even if grudgingly. As a piano teacher who has, more recently, greatly benefited from these new technologies, I can now admit that I should have paid attention to these new technologies much earlier.

Of course, I still have misgivings about certain aspects of the Web. Still, as far as music is concerned, we have no choice but to accept the changes. Anyone can see that the revolutions which have taken place in the music recording industry, thanks to mp3s, file sharing software, and social networking websites are huge, and that there is now no going back to the old ways.

Thanks to PDFs and other Web-based publishing formats, the same is true of music instruction and notation. Like the recording industry, the world of music instruction is changing dramatically. It's not my place to say whether these developments are good or bad. Whatever they are, they are here to stay, so it's best for us recovering Luddites to accept these changes and move on.

The PDF format has been around since the mid 1990s, but as a format for music notation and instruction, it has only recently arrived. Whether or not we are completely familiar with what a PDF is, thee format is the future of online music publication, and countless music instructors and students alike are even now using PDFs for a variety of musical purposes.

In short, PDF stands for "portable document format." It was created by the Adobe software company in 1993, and its purpose is to resemble, as closely as possible, real-life documents. Unlike programs such Microsoft Word, which is basically a word-processing program, Adobe's software focuses on the two-dimensional presentation of words, pictures, symbols, and other graphics on a page. In this light, it's easy to understand why PDFs are perfect for music notation. Obviously, it's practically impossible to create music notation in a word processing document; PDFs provide a highly functional alternative.

Piano PDFs are a story unto themselves. As one of the most popular instruments in the history of the world, piano is at the center of the current boom in music lessons for adults. Naturally, many busy adult pianists have turned to the Web to provide instructions and guidance through the difficult process of learning piano. In an overwhelmingly large number of cases, PDF is the preferred format for Web-based music instructors, as well as those individuals whose hard work is giving us rapidly growing databases of music that was previously only available in real-world books. Instead, now there are PDF's that have video and audio embedded, so it is in essence just like a web page.

So, when you are looking for an online piano instruction service to use, any instructor who uses PDFs is a good bet. This shows that he or she has kept up with emerging technologies and cares about providing a high-quality learning experience for students.

At the same time, if you plan to continue your piano instruction to advanced levels, it becomes more and more important to familiarize yourself with the PDF format. After all, soon you will be proficient enough to seek out pieces to play that are not directly related toy our music instruction. When this time comes, you will want to use one of the many vast online databases of musical pieces, many of which use exclusively piano PDFs.

An Interview With Koko Dozo: Bringing a Little Madness - and Lots of Teamwork - Into the Mix

The rock and roll super group - a group made of musicians who are well-known for being in other groups, or, solo stars who band together into one entity, like the comic book heroes X-men or The Avengers - has a long history in rock music. The super group Blind Faith was comprised of guitar giant Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker from Cream, joined with Steve Winwood of Traffic. Clapton also joined with legendary Allman Brother Duane Allman and super drummer Jim Gordon to form Derek and the Dominoes, who recorded the classic rock album 'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.'

Oftentimes in jazz, musicians from different groups (who are great solo artists in their own right) will come together and create great music. However, this is not always the case. Groups made up of great performers - those used to working alone or being the "star" - can sometimes be less than the sum of their parts, as egos clash and the group becomes like a bad basketball team, where everyone wants to score and nobody wants to pass or play defense. Koko Dozo, however, is a dream team. Each member of the group, which includes Polarity/1, Rubio and Amy Douglas, is an equal contributor, with the entire group utilizing each member's skills and talents. Once more, there are no egos clashing. Quite the opposite occurs, as the members provide support and encouragement for one another. On the group's debut 'Illegal Space Aliens,' Koko Dozo shows that individual and group expression can meld into one, and - just like a good jazz band, baseball team or this year's Boston Celtics - can result in something even greater than the sum of its parts.

[Mark Kirby] What kind of music was played in your homes when you were growing up?

[Polarity/1] I started off with my dad's records. My earliest faves were Cab Calloway, Tito Rodriguez and other salsa music, Elvis, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Then there was the radio and television shows like American Bandstand, Soul Train and the Ed Sullivan Show.

[Rubio] My parents were fundamentalists and went through this period of being afraid of having any secular music in the house, so for a while we had nothing but this old 8-track with Pat Boone and Bob Dylan's one Christian album. No, I'm not making this up. I used to stay up nights just surfing the dial on this crappy transistor radio I had and absorbing everything I could get my ears on.

[Amy Douglas] I come from a family that played instruments. Growing up, I was fortunate to have parents that liked music quite a bit. My dad was all about jazz - Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Brubeck, Duke, Bird and Diz, etc. - so I get my love of jazz from him and my grandparents. My mom was a huge fan of artists like Carol King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Jim Croce and Elton John (still one of my personal heroes to this day). She was also a huge fan of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Temptations, Philly soul, and anything Gamble and Huff touched, from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes to the Spinners and all in-between. She liked Black music in general. Also heavily on rotation in the house growing up was Aretha Franklin, who served as my initial influence into opening up my head and wailing away, and Stevie Wonder, who was one of my greatest influences of all.

[Mark Kirby] What incident or moment ignited your passion to perform or otherwise get into music?

[Polarity/1] When I was in high school I discovered Brazilian music, Appalachian folk, Eric Dolphy, 16th century Japanese court music, Bob Dylan and Mahavishnu Orchestra. My thing with Dylan got me to buy a guitar so I could express my rage over the inconveniences of life on earth. Within weeks I was writing clueless protest songs about important political issues I never bothered to read about.

[Rubio] I've had a passion for music as long as I can remember. I used to go nuts over it even as an infant apparently. I started taking lessons at age four. When I was 11, I formally made a decision to dedicate myself to music. I was classically trained on piano and organ as a kid. As a teenager, I started getting heavily into metal and prog rock and things like that.

[Amy Douglas] I think growing up as a child in the 1970s served as a constant source of inspiration and was a catalyst. From just listening constantly to my parents' music, and then turning on the TV or radio, it seems like virtually EVERYTHING influenced me. But if I had to narrow it down to a few choice moments, I'd say playing Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life," seeing Chaka Khan on Soul Train, seeing Bowie everywhere on TV, hearing all the Beatles' albums, and most important, hearing Led Zeppelin, my favorite band of all time. Between the TV shows Soul Train, Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, there was no shortage of good stuff to draw on. I think the combination of hearing all this stuff as a child was like a bomb going off. Certainly, I take almost all my visual cues from Donna Summer, P-Funk and Chaka.

[Mark Kirby] Describe your musical backgrounds. Did you study formally in school? Or take lessons?

[Polarity/1] When I was 14 I bought a plywood guitar with a book of tunes that had chord diagrams, and then I starting writing my own songs. A couple of years later I took a few lessons and learned how to play major and minor seventh chords so I could add some jazz and bossa nova flavor to my songs.

I spent a semester at Berklee School of Music in Boston, which was a weird move, being that I couldn't functionally read music and my brain isn't wired for formal learning. But I could write notation a little bit and tried to prove that I was Berklee-worthy by hot-dogging the homework projects - like scoring an arrangement of Monk's "Epistrophy in 7/4," which nobody could play. I was redeemed a few years ago when I notated a 7/4 thing for Pete McCann and Gregg Bendian to play on "Munton's Revenge" on the Polarity/1 'Speechless' album. They nailed it pretty quickly. What was good about the year at Berklee was that even though I couldn't learn in a normal way, [with] what they were throwing at me, I was able to sort of "visualize" all these concepts like chord functions and voicings. It all came in handy much later on in unexpected ways when I would create quite complex things without "knowing how" and be taken seriously. In that sense I've had a very real musical training.

[Rubio] I had lessons up until I was 16, mostly classical music. When I was younger, we had a deal where I got free lessons in return for performing for Kawai, showcasing their instruments in malls and conventions. Because of that, I had some performance training as well. By my 17th birthday I was playing full-time with bands and earning my keep.

[Amy Douglas] I started doing music from age six onward. I first discovered I could sing when my elementary school teacher wrote my mom a letter saying, "Ask Amy to sing for you sometime." My grandmother taught me piano initially, and from there I took lessons. From 6th grade on, I was one of those disgusting "Music Big Concert School" kids. I started learning music theory in junior high and I got a lot of credit from the state of New York, won the Louis Armstrong and Eubie Blake music scholarships and then went to study Jazz Theory and Composition at New York University. UUUUUUGH.

[Mark Kirby] What were some of your earliest musical experiences?

[Polarity/1] My earliest gigging experiences in high school were great antidotes for bad looks and bad conversation-starting skills. Music-making has been all good except for one rough period where I got a real-world lesson about where my strengths and weaknesses were. My songs started off in folk and rock. Then they got jazzy and funky. Then I wanted to bring elements of the late John Coltrane, Mingus and Mahavishnu. So I created a band with all jazz guys instead of folk-rockers which was most[ly] cool - except that I wasn't that kind of player with that kind of training. Since my only interest in the guitar was for songwriting, I had no chops and couldn't contribute much on the instrumentals the other guys were writing. And they needed a serious jazz/metal guitar player. So I got fired from my own band. It triggered a move into a radically different direction, where I had to start from scratch and discover what my own creative process was, make a commitment to it and then succeed on my own terms. And with that kind of focus, I found that there were a whole lot of different things that I did really well with my own vision and method and developed big chops with it.

[Rubio] It was rough from age 11 to 16 because I basically had to disappear into a hole and hibernate in order to switch from organ to piano, and didn't perform live at all during that time. It was a definite case of withdrawal. My first few rock bands were rough, too. I was nicknamed "Wendel" because that was Gomer Pyle's actual first name in the TV show. I'm sorry to say that at the time the name fit perfectly. I was more than a bit naive. I'm very grateful for those times, though, because I learned a lot very quickly.

[Amy Douglas] I played my first pro gig at age 12 and did my first pro session at 13. I told my parents I didn't want to go to school anymore. From then onwards, it got darker. My first pro gig was at a supper club on Long Island. Between dishes of steak and shrimp, I sang a combination of jazz standards and disco classics. It was a blast.

[Mark Kirby] Describe your individual musical journeys from the first bands to Koko Dozo.

[Polarity/1] I started off writing songs until I hooked up with the SIM (Studio For Interrelated Media) department at Mass Art (Massachusetts College of Art) when I was discovering Cage, Xenakis, George Crumb, Joan LaBarbera, Steve Reich and others. I made a decision to not use melody, harmony or rhythm in any way that resembled songs or jazz. And since I was also a visual artist at that time, the art scene provided venues for this new direction. So my visual stuff, music and lyric-writing got re-channeled into performance art and composing for choreographers and experimental theater. I also formed a group called Vocal Repercussions that did totally improvised vocals-only performances, where abstract vocal sounds morphed into words, free-associated texts, rhythms and harmonies. Then I moved to NYC and got obsessed with groove. I studied African drumming, played in samba bands and had a hip-hop thing with rapper D.A.V. called Medicine Crew. Hip-hop was an easy transition because I was already into looping and collaging, but in an abstract mode, and my performance poetry worked in a rap format. I was always into groove since I was little - funk, salsa, African drumming, calypso, samba and reggae. A couple years later I got back into songwriting and all that stuff merged into songs and electronica when I became Polarity/1. And that led to film scoring and collaborating with Rubio on Audioplasm, which led to Koko Dozo. And recently I circled back to the art scene, scoring for Battery Dance Company and Quorum Ballet from Lisbon.

[Rubio] My very first band I was in was ruled with an iron fist by this absolute tyrant and it was a real wakeup call. Those were also very fun times, of course. After a couple years in my hometown of Winnipeg, Canada, I moved to Toronto for six years before coming to NYC in 1997. I've done just about every kind of gig you can think of in that time, both live and in the studio.

[Amy Douglas] I had been gigging steadily in my own bands, ranging from funk to rock. I was part of a group of downtown artists known as the "Homocorp" scene. I was [also] a part-time member of the Squeezebox Band - the same Squeezebox they recently released a film about at this year's Tribeca Film Festival - and basically spent my 20s either gigging, doing sessions or hanging with drag queens and getting into trouble.

[Mark Kirby] How did the three of you meet and get together?

[Rubio] I had met Polar in 2003 through a mutual friend, a drummer called Curtis Watts, with whom we had a mutual interest in samba. We hit it off and started working together sporadically. In the fall of 2005 we decided to completely redesign Polar's studio with my help and work on each other's projects. That blossomed into us working together on some production stuff, mainly soundtracks for documentaries, and an instrumental collaboration called Audioplasm.

[Polarity/1] Rubio and I were working on the Heavy Meadow album at the same time he was working with Amy in her "Red Hot Mama" show. He suggested the three [of us] get together to see if we could come up with something interesting.

[Amy Douglas] I had a show called "Red Hot Mama," which was a rock vaudeville show, and I had hired Rubio as the keyboardist, and we really hit it off. When the show folded, he introduced me to Polar, the two of them having done a project called Audioplasm. I am way happier in Koko Dozo than I've been in just about anything I've ever done. We got together on a super hot summer day in 2007 and realized we had a great capacity to make incredible music based on our collective musical passions and influences, which also include a group devotion to Brazilian music, Afrobeat, and Latin music, so we really had quite a stewpot brewin' by the time we started to write songs.

[Mark Kirby] How did you arrive at the name Koko Dozo?

[Amy Douglas] At the risk of hurting myself by patting myself on the back, I have to take the credit for it. My ex-boyfriend had mentioned wanting to do an avant-garde project and he threw out Koko Dozo as a trial name. When we were thinking about names, I threw it out there, and the guys liked it. I think it's fab. [My ex-boyfriend] did so little for me while we were together, [so] at least he gave the band a great name.

[Mark Kirby] What is the musical concept of the band?

[Amy Douglas] It's a really huge one. First and foremost it's to virtually force people to have to really listen to what we do, and to help audiences that have been pandered to and been reduced to some sort of lowest common denominator grow some brain cells back. The music is obviously a ton of fun, it puts you in the mood to do some serious dancing and there's more than a healthy dose of silly swirling around in the mix. But really listen to the words and you'll hear that we have some deep issues we're struggling with and we do address them in our songs, ranging from our distrust of our government, to the polarization of culture in our home of New York City and a whole bunch of other things. Our musical concept is to shrink the globe as well; the internet has made the world a smaller place and we wanted to find a way to fuse cultures, languages, styles and influences together in a way that reeks of New York City life, but will appeal to an audience that is truly global.

[Rubio] Generally, Polar handles the arrangements and the drum and percussion elements. I come up with harmonic ideas, play most of the keyboard/bass-type things and mix the tracks. Amy is the voice of the project and handles melodies. Obviously, there is a lot of overlap. There is one song I arranged and produced ("Boomchi"). Polar and I each do one lead vocal ("Kokodozonomics" and "The Heart," respectively). There are songs where Amy did the chord structure and played keyboards. Polar is very avant-garde and always pushing the envelope. Amy is very melodic and tends to create things that are catchy and mass-appealing. I'm kind of in the middle.

[Polarity/1] We have an open source attitude about music. Between us, we've worked just about every genre category there is and we don't feel any compulsion to restrict where we go. Each song has a strong identity of its own but they all sound like Koko Dozo. Conventional wisdom dictates that our way of working will guarantee that we'll never find an audience. But we know that's bullshit. The post-corporate online music business has made it okay for people to trust their intuitions about the music they discover. An amazing variety of people are responding. We're reaching young electro heads, world-beaters, dance-clubbers, boomers, electronica geeks, and po-po-pomo gonzoid hairy-backed noiz gimps living in the basement of the basement on diets of sticky buns and penis butter and toe jam sandwiches. The parents and the kiddies like us too. And we write in different languages (English, Spanish and Portuguese) which reaches out even further. Also we have this whole bargain-basement-space vibe that makes things really fun.

[Mark Kirby] What is the story behind the Sun Ra-esque (a new word!) dress and alien mythology?

[Polarity/1] Here's the story: we came from outer space and landed on Earth to exploit its resources - and for other reasons that we'd rather not discuss. We're from the low-rent part of the universe where you wear whatever is lying around in the alley on garbage pickup day. That, coincidentally, is the same galaxy where Sun Ra came from.

[Amy Douglas] {Laughter} Well...the word "alien" permeates much of what we do and we like to riff on the term. Alien, as we mean it internally, is the feeling of not being comfortable in one's skin, feeling out of synch with the world around you, feeling like the constant outsider. And we decided to really play with the word, and we decided that a space age "alien" theme would suit us wackos pretty well! Besides, it gives me an excuse to wear wigs and glitter, which I feel I was born to do.

[Rubio] We really wanted to put the fun and craziness back in music. Too many projects take themselves too seriously these days, which is BEYOND ironic.

[Mark Kirby] Describe the writing, recording and producing process for this CD. Were you all in the same studio at the same time?

[Polarity/1] Since we work in my studio, I'm there for the whole process. Generally, I show Amy and Rubio a track that I think would work for Koko Dozo. It might be just a sketch, almost complete, or anything in between. I might have complete lyrics as well ("Face On The Dancefloor," "Kokodozonomics") or just a rough idea for lyrics that Amy and I will collaborate on ("Shine"). Or Amy and/or Rubio will take one of my tracks and turn it into a song ("Second Time," "The Heart"). Sometimes Amy has a song and I build a track around her chord changes, melody and vibe and help with the lyrics ("Down"). Rubio and Amy wrote "Boomchi" together and Rubio produced that track.

Rubio is the guy with the engine-ear. He comes in when a track is pretty much laid out and starts tweaking things. Then he'll add his keyboard solos, sometimes bass and the more harmonically dense keyboard stuff. I do keyboard parts that don't require big chops. Then Amy comes in and we track vocals. Rubio and I finish the mixes with Rubio in the big chair. Joe Lambert masters everything at Trutone Studios. He's done all the Polarity/1 stuff and Heavy Meadow too. Lately Amy has been playing some keyboard parts.

[Rubio] As far as recording, we were generally all there. I personally NEVER record final voices without someone else in the room to give me a sense of perspective. Polar did a lot of editing on his own but often that job fell to me as well. The mixes were generally done with Polar and me, and we would send roughs to Amy for her input.

[Mark Kirby] What is your live show like? Is there a full band?

[Amy Douglas] It's a full-on brigade of madness! We operate as a trio, currently using our tracks and the addition of live keys and guitar, bass and percussion.

[Rubio] I would love to have a live band, but right now circumstances and logistics just don't allow it. The three of us do perform live, though. Polar plays electronic drums, guitar and hand percussion, I play keyboards live and we all sing. We use versions of the tracks that are customized for live shows, so what you hear on stage is not necessarily exactly what you'd hear on the studio version.

[Polarity/1] Our shows are fun for us, and I suppose audiences love to watch grown people making funny noises up there and bouncing around like homeless space mutants. Amy's wigs and Rubio's Viking helmet are worth the price of admission. And gazing at my psychedelic death-ray yarmulke is a life-affirming way to blow off shabbos.

There are basically three different types of sports handicapping. They are situational handicapping, fundamental handicapping and technical handicapping. For those of you unfamiliar with these three categories, allow me to briefly explain what these three types of sports handicapping are and also provide some examples.

First, let's take a look at situational handicapping. This type of sports handicapping deals with analyzing scheduling, motivation, letdown scenarios, etc. For example, Team ABC is coming off a huge win over their arch-rival. Now they must travel cross-country to face what is perceived to be an inferior opponent. Team ABC may also have another crucial division opponent on deck. Team ABC would be a good go-against team in this spot due to the travel, the look ahead and the possibility of a letdown from their huge win last time out.

Next, let's take a look at fundamental handicapping. This involves analyzing how two teams match up against each other. For example, Team ABC is ranked first in the NFL in passing offense. They are facing Team XYZ, who is ranked last in the NFL in pass defense. In this case, Team ABC holds a significant fundamental advantage over Team XYZ. In baseball, another example would be Team ABC is starting a lefty today who owns a 2.30 ERA on the season. Their opponent, Team XYZ, is 2-10 and scoring just 3 runs per game vs. lefty starters. In this example, Team ABC also holds a significant fundamental advantage over Team XYZ.

The last type is technical handicapping, sometimes referred to as trend handicapping. For example, Team ABC is 6-1 against the spread this season when playing at home against teams with a losing record. Their opponent, Team XYZ, is 2-5 ATS this season as a road underdog coming off a home win. In this case, Team ABC has a technical advantage over Team XYZ. One problem with this type of handicapping is you can find plenty of trends supporting each side in a game if you dig deeply enough.

Some handicappers hang their hat on one type of handicapping. Some market themselves as technical experts. Others claim to be situational handicapping experts. I do not agree with that line of thinking. I do not believe you can truly handicap any game by just looking at it from one of the three aspects. I believe it is important to use all three types of handicapping when analyzing any game.

I was born because a man came to kill my father. If he hadn't showed up with a gun in his pocket and bad thoughts in his head, I wouldn't exist, much less have a story to tell. This tragic footnote to my conception left me feeling as if I had three parents: a father, a mother, and a murderer.

My father suffered from strange and temporarily paralyzing attacks of catatonia that my family, with characteristic discretion, referred to as Dad's "Sock Moments." You would walk past my parents' bedroom door on the way to breakfast or the bathroom and glimpse Dad sitting on his side of the bed, fully dressed, legs crossed, one shoe on, sock in hand, about to put on his other shoe. Perfectly normal, right? Trouble was, sometimes ten or twenty minutes would pass and you'd look in on him again and he'd still be sitting there, sock in hand, staring at the other shoe he'd yet to fill.

Once, my sister Lucy and I clocked him with the timer my mother used to make sure the roast beef was rare. Fifty-seven minutes passed before he got the other sock on. Frozen in time and space in his own thoughts, Dad would appear perfectly normal, except for the look he'd have in his eye. It wasn't a faraway, glassy-eyed stare, it was a perplexed squint, as if he were trying to see something he wasn't sure was there.

My father could have three episodes in a week, then there'd be a six month reprieve. Usually, but not always, these becalmed fits of melancholic introspection would come over him in the morning as he readied himself to set off for work. But sometimes, they'd ambush him in the evening, when he went upstairs just for a moment to put on a fresh shirt or wash his hands or bring my mother her purse. Occasionally, according to my mom, they'd even bushwhack him after midnight, when a dry mouth or a bad dream would wake him and he'd reach for his slippers with the thought of heading downstairs to make himself a cup of tea or a stiff drink. Only he'd never get there. Technically, those weren't sock moments because my mother would wake up and find her husband cradling a slipper. But the question remained the same: what was going on in Dad's head?

Once, when I was eight, and Dad was lost in his bedroom with nothing but a sock to show him the way home, I snuck into the room, tiptoed past him, and slipped into his big closet. He used it as a dressing room. It was the grandest thing about the house we lived in then; it was a long, narrow, wondrous little right-triangle of a room tucked under the stairs to the attic. It had a round window at one end that offered a view of nothing but sky and it smelled of cedar and shoe polish and dust from parts of his life that were none of a small boy's business.

I knew I was trespassing. The closet was Dad's private space, to be entered only at his personal invitation, and explored under his supervision. There were bone-handled pocket knives to be opened and closed, flyrods to be assembled, and a wooden crate that once held a dozen bottles of Chateau Y'quem but now was home to the collection of Indian arrowheads and stone tomahawks he'd found in freshly plowed fields and unearthed in serpentine burial mounds during what passed for boyhood in his hardscrabble, Midwestern youth. But his hospitality had its limits. Even when I was a baby, if I crawled too far back into his closet and tried to open the old steamer-trunk, latched, strapped closed, and too heavy to lift, visiting hour would be over. My father would pull me away from it as if it were radioactive and in the grownup voice he used with doctors who came to our house to talk to him, he'd announce, "Nothing in there pertains to you."

I remember asking him once, "Then why can't I look in it?"

"I've lost the key," was what he said, but I didn't believe it. I just figured that's where Dad kept his real treasure and he didn't want anyone to know because he was afraid they'd steal it.

Back when I was invading Dad's private space at age eight I felt guilty on two counts; I was doing what I had been told not to do and worse, I was taking unfair advantage of what seemed to be, until several decades later, my father's only weakness -- his sock moments. Whether out of my own innate sense of fairness or fear of the great man, paralyzed on the edge of the bed, I did not go directly to the trunk that loomed so large in my imagination. Instead, I contented myself with taking out the Indian artifacts. A noisy child by nature, prone to talking to myself out loud, I retold the stories he had shared with me about the Indian tribes that lorded over the state of Illinois long before he was born -- the Kaskaskia, the Cahokia, and the Peoria tribes, decimated by their brethren, the Iroquois, in the Beaver Wars. But it wasn't the same. I wanted his voice, I wanted him to come back from wherever he was in his Sock Moment, I wanted him to hear me. Anything was preferable to the loneliness I felt knowing he could be so close and yet still so far away.

Suddenly desperate to break the spell that held him, I did the worst thing I could imagine, far more forbidden and dangerous and unforgivable than opening the trunk -- I stood up on the overturned wine box, pulled out the squeaky top drawer of his head-high dresser, and took hold of the loaded .38 caliber long-barreled Smith & Wesson revolver he kept on top of his clean handkerchiefs.

He was so far gone even the sound of me opening the forbidden gun drawer did not wake him. Not even the click of me closing the cylinder snapped him out of whatever held him captive. What if Dad never woke up? What if he never came back from the Sock Moment? What if he stayed petrified like that forever?

Missing him, wanting him, needing him, and mad at him, I pulled back the hammer of the big pistol. My hands shook, my finger closed on the trigger. If I fired the gun, he'd have to wake up. No matter how severely I'd be punished, at least he'd be with me. An eighth of an ounce of trigger pressure away from bringing the hammer down on the moment -- the thought occurred to me: what if I pulled the trigger and he still didn't wake up?

Then I'd know there was no hope. I lowered the hammer and placed the handgun back onto tomorrow's handkerchief and closed the squeaky drawer.

I went back out into his bedroom and got down on my knees the way you do in church. Taking the argyle sock from his hand, I gently began to pull it onto his long, narrow, white foot.

I watched as my father's eyes focused down on me. They were grey, pearly and wet, like the inside of a shell pulled up from the sea with something alive inside it.

"Daddy?" He had a scar shaped like a crescent on his forehead. His hair was grey and cut so short you could see the shape of his skull and the veins feeding his brain like the Visible Man model he had helped me put together.

"Yes?" He still sounded far away.

"What are you thinking?"

"I was thinking about . . . " The sock was on now. He was lacing up the shoe by himself. " . . . how I feel about things."

The Country Girl is one of the Clifford Odet’s last plays. It first premiered on Broadway in 1950. The first Broadway version starred Uta Hagen, Paul Kelly and Steven Hill. In 1954, a film was made based on the play. It starred Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, and William Holden. The film was a huge success and went on to win two Academy Awards.

The Story

The play tells a classic backstage story. Georgie is married to actor Frank Elgin. Elgin was once a great theater star but is now out of luck. He is offered a major role in a play by a very famous director Bernie Dodd. Elgin now has a chance to make a comeback but will he be able to get over his past and his drinking problem and become the star that he was? That is for the audience to see. The play is about how Georgie helps Frank make a comeback while at the same time fights her love for another man.

Film Reel

Once the film roll is complete and ready to be developed, it is loaded/ spooled onto a film reel in a darkroom. This step involves extra carefulness as portions of the film might not get developed if it has been improperly loaded. A film reel actually looks like a picture on a reel that would rotate and the photographs would show up, one after the other, on a cinema screen like the way cinemas showed movies long time back or like the Hollywood old film reel pictures as depicted in today’s movies.

Basically film reels are used for holding the roll film firmly so that it can be properly developed once inside the film processing tank. The roll takes the form of a spiral so that the film surfaces do not touch and it is uniformly spaced to let the chemical flow freely and touch every part of the film. The reel should be dry as any sign of dampness makes loading difficult.

Film reels are available in either plastic or steel and also in varied sizes to accommodate different films. Steel reels are more durable while the plastic ones are easier to handle by amateur photographers.

Film Reel Brands

Film Processing Tanks

The various chemicals required for developing the photographs can be poured inside through the opening in the tank’s lid.

Similar to film reels, the film processing tank comes with different tank varieties and reel sizes to cater to both 35mm and 120mm film. The varieties include stainless steel and plastic tanks. For beginners it is advisable to use plastic tanks as they are cheap and user-friendly. However when processing temperature needs to be controlled, only stainless tanks can be used. Moreover a steel tank can be used either wet or dry unlike plastic tank where the film sticks and gets ruined if the tank is wet.

The core steps for developing photographs are summarized in the following steps:

1. Prepare all the necessary equipment (tools, chemicals etc);

2. Spool the film onto the film reel in the dark;

3. Transfer the reel to the film processing tank sealed by a cap (once safely packed inside, film can be easily developed in daylight without getting ruined);

4. Pour the developer in the tank and start the agitation process till required;

5. After agitation is complete, wash the film;

6. Hang to dry in a dust-free area;

7. Cut the dry film into strips for printing.

The Mercury Prize is awarded for the best album from the UK or Ireland. As the range of artists up for the award is so diverse, it is incredibly difficult to judge. Former winners include; Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys, Antony and the Johnsons and PJ Harvey. Nominated artists usually see their album sales increase and the winner receives 20,000 pounds.

The list as always causes music debates around the country, which is also the one of its aims. The Mercury Prize was originally set up as a sort of antidote to the Brits and intended to broaden people's musical tastes and draw attention to lesser known acts (....and boost album sales).

So the nominations are:

It goes without saying that this list will not please everyone and I think that it is worth pointing out a few noticeable absentees. MIA, Portishead, Hot Chip and Foals are all no shows.

So how do you decide which album is the best? Must it be the most pleasant to listen too? or, most interesting? The idea of the prize is that it is awarded to the most innovative and ground breaking musician(s) as the prize marks music moving forward.

This vision may lead you to question some of the nominees; for me, in particular, Adele, The Last Shadow Puppets, Estelle. Saying that, I am thankful to see that there has been no nomination of; Kate Nash, Ting Tings or The Pigeon Detectives.

The claim that the Mercury Prize 'focuses on the music on the album, it does not take into account album sales, media exposure or live performances', almost becomes laughable when you are looking at the list. If this claim is true then why would Adele have been listed? Her voice is good, and a couple of her songs have been well received but I think that most people would agree, her album does not match the hype that surrounded it upon its release.

The Mercury prize is always criticized for a number of different reasons. Looking at past lists there appears to be a trend in categories; there seems to always be a 'token' pop, urban, indie, folk, jazz, world, etc, act. It does give the impression that the panel needs to 'tick boxes'. This makes the award less credible because it becomes commercial, which is the exact opposite of what it is meant to be.

So how the hell do you choose a winner? I think the award has just made it too hard for itself. It's almost a pointless debate. The award is daft and I believe it to be an impossible task to compare such diverse genres of music and choose the best. The only real good thing about this award is that it introduces acts to people that they may not have heard of and helps the artist on a path to bigger success.

Does anyone even really care who wins? I mean it's judged by a load of journalists and music critics and we have enough of their opinions shoved down our throats all the rest of the year anyway. The award just stinks of press and money. It's pompous and fake.

But it does stir up music disputes and gets people passionate about the music they like. It encourages musical evolution and it reflects the zeitgeist of our time.

It's very hard to say whether this award should be taken as seriously as it is or not but one thing is for sure; I'm a sucker for it. I'm going to watch the awards and I will definitely find myself caught in debate about who would be a worthy winner.

We've all been in this situation before: you are watching a TV program when suddenly, the commercial break comes up. The commercial is much louder than the program you were watching. You turn down the volume, only to have to turn it back up once the program resumes.

This isn't some technical error at your local TV station or even your cable provider. This is an intentional strategy in the broadcasting industry. The idea is to get people to pay attention to the commercials by making them so much louder than the program. This is something also done in the recording industry with regards to music as well. This is changing the way that people record music, even the way people listen to music has changed as a result.

Average volume levels were once much lower in the recording industry. The norm would be 2 to 3 as the volume standard. Recordings would be done at this volume to make for a more pleasant experience for the listener. This also allowed for greater dynamic range on recordings, with a better blend of sounds on record.

Lower volume levels gave engineers the freedom to showcase arrangements and instrumentation. It also allowed them the ability to create greater freedom for movement where volume was concerned. Volume while recording music is a range in which you can increase or decrease the amount of sound. When you work with negative numbers on your volume dial; somewhere between -6 and -1, you have a lot of room to increase the volume if needed.

However, the standard volume has increased as the recording industry has progressed technologically. Currently, the industry standard is closer to 0 - one of the highest possible volumes. Many people do not even notice this and just turn down the volume during playback. This decision by the recording industry has, however, changed the way everything is done in the music recording industry, from the way instruments are recorded to the way that people listen to records.

This higher volume has changed the way that musicians and recording engineers think about dynamics, volume range and instrumentation and arrangements themselves. This has eliminated some of the possibilities for recording which were once parts of the music industry's palate. If you take a close listen to music which has been recorded recently, you may notice that there is a lot less dynamic range than once was the norm, a change in the types of instrumentation used and so on. This is all due to the fact that the volume has been turned up as high as it can go! This has limited the possibilities for musicians and recording engineers.

Volume control and in fact, the entire process of mastering differs according to the format you get your music in. There is a different volume standard for the radio than for CD, which is in turn different than that for MP3 format. Those who have custom recording technologies and setups at their disposal, there can be more freedom in the volume levels and mastering process used. Before recording, you should think about what sort of volume you want your finished product to be at. This will help you make your own way towards the industry standards of producing CDs.

When recording, you should always think about the different volume levels which you can use and the big differences they can make to your recordings. You certainly don't want to sacrifice your vision for the recording for the sake of volume. While you do want to fall within the parameters of industry standards, you also want to give yourself as much room to create as possible. This will let you make the recording you want at a volume level that invites the listener to turn it up and have a deeper experience.

The Effortless & Cheap Hip-hop Studio

So you want to get into hip-hop/rap/R&B production and you don’t really know how? Well, it’s way easier than you may think. With just a few items, you could be well on your way to being the next Timbaland, Dre, or Alchemist.

So where do you start? First off, you need to make sure you have the right software. A lot of people out there like to sample beats and use other people’s music, but you want to be original. At least in the beginning, because if you are like I was, you probably want to develop your own style. Here is my list of the essential start-up software you need to make beats:

Reason 4.0 – Propellerhead’s Reason is one of the most dynamic pieces of software you can have in your arsenal. It’s relatively inexpensive, yet it allows you to produce nearly any sound you can think of via a vast range of synths, drum machines, and effects. It is very user friendly, and produces a powerful, professional sound. Nearly every major producer has used Reason at one point in his or her career.

Fruity Loops Studio – Many producers use Fruity Loops to create entire productions. What really separates FL from Reason is that it has the ability to become a VST instrument when used with some mixing and recording programs such as Cubase or Pro-Tools. (These are the crème’ de la crème’ – but not necessities when you are just starting out)

Sony ACID Pro – This is a cool application that allows you to manipulate the beats you created in Reason or FL. It is user friendly as well and works great on any system.

That’s pretty much it for making beats. My choice is Reason, but as you try them all out, you may find that you like FL Studio better or a combination of the two. Its all about finding what you are most comfortable with. Now, you have your software and have made a sick beat. Now what? The following is my recommendation for recording & mixing software:

Adobe Audition – This used to be called Cool Edit Pro. It uses a very simple interface in which you are able to load your beat tracks and record your vocal tracks. This can also be great if you want to use live instruments in addition to your beats.

That’s really all you need for software. Something to make the music, and something to record it on. Now, you ask, what about hardware?

Samson CO1 Cardiod Condenser Microphone – This is a great studio mic. It runs about $70 and sounds great. Make sure to get a few cables, boom stand, and wind screen. (about $50) total.

Samson S 48v Phantom Power Supply – You will need this to power your mic. Since studio mics create their own power, the phantom power source is basically the device that harnesses that power and sends it through your mic.

Any MIDI capable keyboard – This is one of the tools you will use with Reason or Fruity Loops to make beats. MIDI will allow you to play the sound files on your keyboard, rather than on your computer. Make sure to also get a MIDI to USB cable so that you can attach it to your sound card.

M Audio Audiophile 2496 Interface – This is your awesome sound card. It runs less than a hundred bucks and allows you to hook up all your gear to your pc.

Samson Resolv 40a Active Studio Monitors – While ordinary stereo speakers will do just fine, these all you to hear exactly how your tracks will sound when played over your mp3 player, radio, or local club.

And that’s it! You have all you need to get started.

Mastering Blues Keyboard Riffs

In popular music, blues keyboard riffs are universal. From Billy Preston jamming with the Rolling Stones to Ray Charles kicking into "What I'd Say," blues progressions and scales serve as the basis for legendary songs and amazing keyboard solos. One of the greatest aspects of blues keyboard riffs is the musical theory behind them, which is simple enough for beginners, yet still challenges virtuosos.

An important musical tool to understand when playing blues keyboard riffs is the pentatonic scale. The minor pentatonic scale is the basis for most blues solos. Its cousin, the blues scale, adds a flatted fifth in between the fourth and fifth of the minor pentatonic. The major pentatonic is also used in blues keyboard riffs.

If you're not familiar with these scales, here are some examples. We'll use the key of E. The minor pentatonic consists of the tones 1, b3, 4, 5 and 7. So in the key of E we would have E, G, A, B and D. To change this to the blues scale, add the flatted fifth, which is bB. This gives you the notes E, G, A, Bb, B and D. The major pentatonic consists of the 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. In the key of E, this gives us E, F#, G#, B and C#. By learning these scales up and down the keyboard, you will have a base on which to build some awesome blues keyboard riffs.

So how do you make these scales mourn and wail like only the blues can? By knowing them inside and out, you can make musical theory sing. Running up and down scales will just make your blues keyboard riffs sound like finger exercises, but knowing how to blend major and minor pentatonic together will leave your listeners astounded. The key is to understand how blues keyboard riffs incorporate each scale over different chords.

For a basic twelve-bar blues progression, the choice of scale is open, with a few basic rules thrown in for good measure. One of the basic rules to keep in mind is that there are two easy scales to use over any one chord. If you're playing over an E or E7 chord, you can choose to use the E minor pentatonic or the E major pentatonic. By alternating between the notes of these two scales, you'll find a variety of notes from which to choose when playing blues keyboard riffs.

You can change any of the minor pentatonic to the blues scale for some added flavor. To do this in the major pentatonic, it may be easier to visualize the scale differently. Take the root of the chord and drop it a minor third. For example, if A is the root, then you would go down to F#. Now play a minor pentatonic in this key. You're using the same notes as the A major pentatonic, just starting on a different root. Change it to a blues scale and you'll have the notes F#, A, B, C, C# and E. Now you've got another blues scale to play over an A chord! It's that simple, and it works for any key.

By mastering the use of these scales, you can play any blues keyboard riffs that come your way. The trick is to practice them until you no longer have to think about the notes; you just feel them under your fingertips. Then you'll wail and mourn like only the greatest blues players can.

Obviously it's not just about the age of the artist but also the impact that artist had on the world. The examples I have listed above, particularly Elvis and The Beatles were in many ways iconic, many have copied them but they will never be able to replace them. Maybe that's why memorabilia is so expensive where these artists are concerned, it's a feeling of having a piece history and it could be argued that these kind of collectables are a good investment for the future.

Learn to be a serious collector

There is obviously an art to collecting the more expensive items available for sale. As a new collector of memorabilia, you wouldn't want to be spending thousands of dollars without knowing what you are doing. Fortunately, there are many items that are very cheap, all right they might not have been owned by the artist, but it's a start. You can buy key rings, pictures, posters and T Shirts. These items are probably classed more as merchandise rather than memorabilia. If you want to touch an item that your favourite artist has touched, be prepared to pay a lot of money. Check out listings on a regular basis and learn what the going price is for an item that interests you.

For most people, collecting music memorabilia online will be a hobby, but be careful, because it's very addictive.

For anyone studying popular classical music, it can be a daunting task to know where to begin. There are so many great pieces that a beginner can get overwhelmed. Here are 10 of the most popular classical pieces with a brief background of each. There are many others, of course, but these 10 are certainly among the most popular classical pieces of all time.

Clair de Lune is a piece by Claude Debussy, a French composer. It is the third and most popular movement of the larger Suite bergamasque. It is played pianissimo and is largely in D-flat major, with a shift to E major toward the end. Clair de Lune has been taught to students of popular classical piano for years and is prominently featured in movies and television shows.

Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14, popularly called the Moonlight Sonata, was completed in 1801. Beethoven had begun to suffer from hearing loss prior to this and used a special rod attached to the piano's soundboard in order to feel the vibrations and enhance his sense of the music. It was given the name Moonlight Sonata by a music critic who compared it to the moonlight shining on a lake.

Canon in D is the most well known piece by Johann Pachelbel. Originally written for three violins and basso continuo, it has since been given many different arrangements. Basso continuo refers to a group of instruments, one of which must be able to play chords. Other instruments must be able to play in the bass register, such as a cello. Canon in D is often played at weddings.

The Hallelujah Chorus is part of George Frideric Handel's Messiah. The text is from a libretto by Charles Jennens, who adapted parts of the Old and New Testaments for his composition. The Hallelujah Chorus is taken from the book of Revelation, and it is customary for audiences to stand during this movement of the Messiah.

George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is a piece that combines the elements of popular classical music with the popular jazz music of the era. It was commissioned as a classical element in an all-jazz concert to be presented by band leader Paul Whiteman. Known as Al Capone's favorite song, Rhapsody in Blue has been featured in numerous films and advertisements.

The Piano Sonata in B minor is one of Franz Listz's most popular classical solo piano works. It is a piece in the Romantic style and consists of small movements woven into a larger whole. Thematic elements are presented in each movement, although the different setting of the movements make the elements sound differently each time. In one section the melody may seem violent, yet later in the piece it becomes something beautiful in a different context.

Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler contains many of the common elements of Mahler's work, such as the funeral march. Commentators have noted that when hearing Mahler's Fifth "you forget that time has passed." Scored for a large orchestra, the Fifth is considered to be Mahler's most conventional symphony up to that point in his career. He was regarded as a highly unconventional composer until the Fifth was published.

Johann Sebastian Bach composed The Well-Tempered Clavier to instruct students in solo piano playing. He collected 24 pieces and published them in 1722 as The Well-Tempered Clavier. In 1744 he published a similar collection with the title Twenty-Four Preludes and Fugues. Combined, these two books comprise The Well-Tempered Clavier.

The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi consists of four violin concertos. A Baroque piece from 1723, The Four Seasons is also considered a series of tone poems, as Vivaldi provided instructions with each movement. Phrases such as "the drunkards have fallen asleep" and "the barking dog" give conductors instructions about the feel of each concerto in this popular classical piece.

Piano Software Courses Vs Piano Tuition Books (Part 1)

If you want to learn to play the piano, you can go to a piano teacher or teach yourself. If you're going to teach yourself how to play the piano then you have to decide whether to use piano software courses or tuition books. Whichever method you choose you should be aware that there is no magic solution to learning to play the piano, whether you choose piano software or tuition books there is going to be a certain amount of study and self-discipline on your part to succeed.

Let's look at the benefits and drawbacks of both methods of teaching yourself to play the piano. Both methods will help you to learn to play the piano or keyboard. Both will provide you with songs to play on the piano and both will include the necessary music theory required to play the piano. So which method is best?

The benefits of tuition books

The obvious benefit of using tuition books is the cost. When you buy a beginners tuition book for example "The Complete Piano Player" or if you're using a Yamaha keyboard "The Complete Keyboard Player". They are normally sold as part of a series, for example, book 1 to book 4 and each book costs about six to ten pounds. You just buy the book you need, which means it's incredibly cheap to get started. Each book contains about twelve songs and each song will introduce something new to learn.

When first starting to play a keyboard instrument its normal practice to learn a simple piece of music that just uses five notes, typically C, D, E, F, G. This is always a good start because it immediately teaches you to use all your fingers on your very first piece of music. Tuition books and software will use this method of teaching.

The drawbacks of tuition books

The main drawback of these books are not the books themselves but the fact that they are designed to be used with a piano teacher. If there is something you can't quite grasp then a piano teacher would have many ways to explain things. Without that help, your task can become overwhelming and many people will give up within the first three months.

The other main drawback is that tuition books dont teach you what you need to know before you start using the books. That is, the basics, what the notes are called on a keyboard, what are the notes called on sheet music, time signatures and time values. These are the basics that apply to all musical instruments and you must learn this first.

What type of guitar do you want to own? Do you want an electric guitar, or do you want an acoustic guitar. The choice is obviously up to you. You will have to take a few things into consideration such as what type of sound are you looking for, ease of playing, and price. There are so many out there that you should easily be able to find what you are looking for.

So you want a guitar, and you are finally going to go out and try and find one.. If you're on a budget then you might think that your buying options are limited. The truth is that you can probably find a better deal on discontinued models that have barely been used. There are a lot of these items laying around waiting to be sold either because the original owner upgraded, became disinterested, or just changed models.

High quality woods are more expensive and often difficult to find. This has led to the construction of low priced guitars made out of alternate wood varieties such as red cedar or mahogany. Low priced guitars can be found with laminated backs and solid wood tops. You can also find cheap acoustic guitars made out of non-wood materials such as plastic or graphite. Although it's a well accepted fact that the top, back, and sides made of solid wood are key factors in contributing to a guitar's pleasant sound, the use of cheap wood materials in acoustic guitars is becoming an acceptable alternative.

The 12 string acoustic guitar has different ways of altering the price between cheap and expensive. Much of the sound originates from the top and your more expensive guitars will feature a solid wood top to get the rich sound you are hoping for. The remainder of the guitar on more expensive models will also be made of solid wood. These methods contribute largely to the sounds produced by an acoustic guitar. Lower priced ones may use solid tops with laminated backs and sides. Acoustic guitars made for amateur guitarists are usually completely laminated. As high quality wood becomes more difficult to obtain guitars have resorted to use other acceptable materials such a plastic and graphite.

Because of the high price of new electric guitars many amateurs have chosen to buy a pre-owned model. Used electric guitars are sold when an owner decides to upgrade to a new model or has stopped playing. Usually the only thing that needs to be done with a used model is to replace the strings, as all other parts of the guitar should remain in good shape.

When you are planning on buying your guitar, don't compromise on quality. Try to find a good name brand used guitar that appears to be in good shape. In the long run you will be glad you did since the cheaper model will either run up a repair bill, or just end up being thrown away.

Be prepared with a guitar budget. Don't go out and buy a $5,000 used guitar because it's the same type of guitar Jimi Hendrix used. Find a quality used guitar that has a reasonable price. Don't go real low on a good name brand as there is more than likely something wrong with the guitar.

Try to find a guitar that is around 10 years old.. You’ll find some great bargains in this category in classified on websites like eBay. They have a section on vintage guitars that are pretty attractive pricewise. Take a look at the sellers feedback to make sure he is respectable and make a deal

What is Correct File Format & Artwork Specification to Use?

The most commonly acceptable native file formats accepted are:

Quark Express

If you have photos or images to print then the following formats best suit these:

TIFF (.tif)

Adobe Photoshop (.psd)

Illustrator EPS (.eps)

Windows Bitmaps (.bmp)

Corel Photo-Paint (.cpt)

JPEG (.jpg)

It is strongly recommend that artwork should not be solely created in Photoshop. This program is ideal for altering photos and adding effects to images. Publisher and Word are also programs to avoid creating artwork in. If you do supply artwork in these formats, prepare to be charged for converting them into print-ready artwork. Establishments will charge for time spent. Therefore, do it yourself!

Your files should also be created in CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black) and at 300dpi resolution - as quality is important! Anything less than 300dpi will result in poor quality print. Remember that printers/presses can only print from artwork supplied.

Most print companies will have templates or guidelines to adhere to when designing specific artwork. These range from simple flyers, postcards, and posters to more complex manuals, DVD booklets, CD inlays & covers as well as information for printing onto CD/DVD's or creating labels. I will go into more detail about these at a later stage.

Also, other tips to look out for when supplying artwork for print are insufficient bleeds or safety margins. Bleed is extending any colour, image, photo or design past the cut line. Bleed also helps printers with a margin of error when trimming. Normally, it’s acceptable to add 2mm of bleed to your designs/layouts. The opposite of bleeds is safety margin. Placing an important header/title or image/photo right next to this crop line, then you risk it being slightly cut off. The recommendation is that you allow for 3mm inside the crop marks.

Percussion instruments are perhaps the oldest type of musical instruments in history. The voice, of course, was probably the first instrument, with percussion coming in as a close second. When you think about the drum and percussion, in it's rural beginnings, you may think of tribal beats from Africa, and maybe the Polynesias.

The term 'percussion' comes from the Latin terms 'percussion' and 'percussus', roughly translates to the beating of something with another object; it can be the sound created by clapping hands, beating sticks, logs, rocks or anything else that emits a noise or creates an audible vibration once struck. In modern time, when you hear the word percussion, the drum probably comes to mind. Percussion instruments have come a long way from their beginnings to create complex and enjoyable sounds that become an integral part of the layering and texture of music today.

The drum is perhaps one of the earliest inventions of the percussion instruments. Originally, the drum was comprised of hollowed out logs of trees. You may have seen versions at luaus. Eventually, the drum came to be a hollowed out stump with a leather skin stretched over it. In Eastern countries the drum was used in meditation practice, and in the South Pacific, the drums were used in ceremonial chants and dances. For many, the importance of the drum was to create rhythmic patterns. These rhythmic patterns are the back bone of music.

As the back bone of a musical composition, the drums may not be recognized as crucial or the top of mind when you think about modern day music, but for musicians, it is recognized that the drummer, and the bass player are really the core of the band. They may not be the ones that the crowd is cheering for, but they are the people that keep everything grounded. A group with a bad drummer is not a group very long...or a successful group very long.

Percussion Instruments have been used all throughout history, which is evident when studying what instruments people used in the past. And, while the drum may be mainly focused to some popular uses like traditional Rock, and Jazz, the drum is still prominent in Japanese culture, military marching, and tribal cultures. I, like most respectable rational people just do not get it. The "it" I am referring to is the fashion trend that leads certain people to allow their jeans and/or shorts to fall half way down their rear end.

Perhaps I am just not in touch anymore. Perhaps I am just being "old". After all I used to wear cut off and mesh shirts during the summers when I was a young teen. Thank goodness I never wore spandex bike shorts.

Something tells me though that this trend is a little different. When I see a young man dressed like this I feel that more than likely he is not going to be a contributor to the good of society. The lower his drawers go, the more I am apt to want to steer clear of this individual.

Followers of this trend tend to be thought of as miscreants, hooligans or ne'er do wells by respectable society.

I do not know why I just do not get to the point. If your pants are half way down your butt you look like an idiot.

No prospective employer in his right mind would hire you if you came in for an interview dressed like that. Just thinking about the expression on his or her face makes me laugh.

So if you must must supplement your amateur skateboarding endeavors by burglarizing homes I would like to give you a piece of advice. You can not run from the cops if your pants are around your ankles.

While watching one of the national news channels yesterday I happened to witness a car chase in California. The gentleman driving the car was a suspected burglary suspect.

He was sporting this particular fashion trend. In addition to being chased by a neighborhood dog it appeared that at some point he had to stop to adjust his belt. Apparently this was unsuccessful and you witnessed him holding on to his pants while he was running to keep them from falling down.

It was quite comical and quite fitting.

Here is a question for you. Why wear a belt in the first place if you are going to let your pants fall half a foot below your waist line?

The moral of the story is if you are going to commit a criminal act you might want to dress accordingly.

Commuting. The very word conjures up visions of frustration and long lines of vehicular madness. The idea is as old as man, even predating the invention that is responsible for our present state of insanity. The wheel. Before the appearance of these circular objects, man's mobility was limited to that of his lower appendages. In the process of time, our Homo Sapient ancestor would eventually tire from having to lug around his paltry possessions and come up with a better means of haulage. His wife would aptly become a source of contention in this matter of constant uprooting. Now that he had created something that he could roll around on terra firma, he set about finding a practical use for the wheel. Having observed that two of anything (not wives) is better than just one, his engineering prowess percolated towards the marriage of these two wheels to a single wooden axle. Add a box-like structure and Presto! A chassis. It was human powered, no less, but certainly now was taking on the form of someting supremely useful. By harnessing human bodies as a power source, there would be no limit to "man power" except for the confines of space. With a large family, you could have more than one vehicle parked on the street. The concept of "mass" (not mess) transportation was born. If necessity is the Mother of invention, then innovation is the Father. The wheel, being the result of the desire for easier locomotion, would evolve a number of "must haves." Namely, essential features that would enhance and complement the operation of this new contraption. Such as brakes, for example. Mans' trial(s) and error(s) would soon uncover the laws of gravity and inertia, spawning the realization that stopping a moving object is just as important as getting it started. Chugging up a hill with a fully loaded cart was the pits, for sure. The subsequent downhill ride initially seemed quite euphoric, to say the least. That is until the affected occupants with its cargo decided that they wanted to get off before...the tree! A third wheel was added to this conveyance. It's called the "steering" wheel. When man finally succeeded in the domestication of certain species of the animal kingdom as a new power option, it freed him toconcentrate his energies on improving this marvel of mobility. Over time, he would add comforts, enclosures and other "niceties" (rear view mirror, glove box, horn, mirror on wifes' sun visor.) Now let's fast forward to the 20th century. At its beginning, gasoline powered vehicles began to appear. Modern man and his unlikely nemesis, the dinosaur, had come full circle in the form of fossil fuel. (These beasts were no doubt the prime reason for man having to become increasingly more mobile. Anyway, who likes to get tramples on?) After more than 100 years of rapid development and engineering expertise, humans' love affair with the automobile would generate many perplexities. Pollution, city congestion, road deterioration, energy shortages, road rage; and more recently, a keen focus on global warming and skyrocketing fuel prices. And they call this progress? So we thought dinosaurs were "extinct". Well, it looks as though they have come back to haunt us in the form of Black Gold. Now who is in danger of extinction? There seems to be only one solution for humanity. Buy a bicycle. Or better yet, stay home.

Men versus Women - Holy Cow are we Different

I know they have made games on the subject and songs about opposites attract, but as my wife hosted a jewelry party the other day at my domicile, it reiterated the vast differences between the sexes. Our jewelry party was well attended by female pals of my wife feeling obligated to buy crap they really don't need and didn't intend to buy. Two weeks prior, they got the invitation in the mail and assuredly cursed my wife's name followed by a comment like "crap, now I have to go to another one of those stupid parties and buy something I don't want because she is my friend." Of course the invitation says "just come, your presence is all that matters, you don't have to purchase anything, blah, blah, blah." Of course everyone knows better, if you don't purchase anything you feel like a schlep and once you leave, everyone will be talking about you, so you buy crap you don't want. NEVER, EVER heard of such a party for the guys!!!! Male gatherings involve beer and sports. Very simple and absolutely no obligation ever to buy anything. Can you imagine a guy hosting a Tupperware party? Hey Steve come on over, we are going to have some pops, snacks, and look at some Tupperware, no obligation to buy. Don't think so!! At Christmas, my wife hosted a church fellowship party at our pad. After the obligatory gift exchange, the ladies gathered in a circle, held hands, and sang Christmas carols. HUH!!! Don't see a gaggle of dudes doing anything like that, ever, no matter how many beverages we have consumed. I can see the invitation now. Tom come on over for a night of mirth and merriment. We will have some adult beverages, watch the football game and then maybe huddle in a circle and sing carols. Bet I would get a lot of takers for that.

Then the next day at work, more proof. One of my female co-workers decided to trade clothes with one of my other female co-workers. What would possess one to do that. I asked one of my male cohorts if he minded if I borrowed his pants for tomorrow at work. Surprisingly, he was not overly excited about lending his garb. This is not something that would even enter a guys mind.

My wife has said that this is because nothing ever enters our minds. True I am a much simpler person then my wife, but when things don't make sense, I call it as it is. Having a party that obligates your friends to annex goods that would prefer not to have, makes no sense. Trading clothes, no sense. This of course is just a few simple examples of how the sexes are so different but I suppose that is why we get along so well together - opposite's do attract, and holy cow are we opposite!!

My Eighteen Month Old Little Girl Scares Me

I have two sixteen year old boys. I have one 6 year old son. I have two girls under the age of 18 months. I have learned how to handle the boys. I have a great deal of experience with boys. I was once a boy. That helps.

With girls however, I am breaking new ground. All of my children are perfect of course. Yet for some reason my eighteen month old little girl sometimes, well quite honestly, she makes me tremble with fear. Is she adorable? Absolutely. Does she make me laugh? Multiple times every day.

I am sure you are wondering by this point what exactly is the problem. I will tell you. She has an utter fascination with shoes.

I know, I know all little kids like to put on their parents shoes. No, it is much more serious than that. Admittedly she does not discriminate. She is just as likely to put on my work boots as she is her mother's tennis shoes. She spends the majority of the day clomping around in some oversized pair of shoes. So much so that I am scared she will turn her ankle some day.

So what is it that is scaring me? It is a combination of factors.

The first one is that "shoe" is one of the first three words that she learned. She learned how to say "Mommy" first of course. Then she learned how to say "shoe" and then she learned "Daddy". You can see where I rank.

The second thing is that she can walk in a pair of high heels as good as any adult. I am not kidding on this one. I have never tried walking in a pair of high heels. I do not know first hand what the difficulty factor is. I did have the impression, however, that it was a rather difficult thing for some to master. Yet my eighteen month old has done so. Is this normal? Is she a phenomenon like Tiger Woods? The problem as I see it is that Tiger Woods special ability would eventually make him millions and millions. My daughter's ability could potentially cost me dearly.

There is just one more thing. My wife told me the other day that while she was cleaning the house she walked by our daughter while she was flipping through a People magazine. Libby (a.k.a the princess) had stopped on a page in the magazine which was devoted to showing us what certain stars were wearing to a red carpet event. She was pointing at the footwear on each picture and saying, "shoes, shoes, shoes, shoes."

This can not be good for me. What does my future hold? I am scared to death that the next word she learns will be "mall". It is one syllable. It would be easy enough for her to say.

I am confident though that it will be a little while before she masters the words, "credit card".

You show up at the theater, sit down and as the row of attendants file into the row in front of you, the woman with the beehive hairdo and her mongo husband sit directly in front of you and your wife. You can't see a thing. Next time you might consider springing for closer tickets.

It's been a long day working in the yard and you've been promising your kids a trip to the water slides and pool since they woke up this morning. You get them all dressed and in the car, pay the ridiculous entry fee (these guys are making thousands, the place is packed) You've been in the tidal wave pool for maybe 5 minutes when everyone is forced to evacuate because a baby did his business in the pool. Maybe next time you should consider building your own pool...

How to Watch TV Series Online Free - It's Easier Than You Think

Are you aware that you can watch TV series online free? A great deal of TV programming is available over the internet, at no charge beyond the internet bill you're already paying.

First thing to bear in mind is that not all TV series are available online for free, at least not legally. To understand why, you have to understand something about how TV broadcasting is set up. Two kinds of TV broadcast exist: paid and free-to-air. Paid includes subscription channels, like Home Box Office (HBO) or Showtime and pay-per-view programming like movies and some sporting events. Free to air broadcasts are typical broadcast TV, the type that anyone can pick up with an antenna. Before cable, all broadcasts were free-to-air. There were few channels available, and their programming tended to be geared toward the widest possible audience, however. Cable introduced specialized programming and thus a lot more choice, higher picture quality... and also large monthly cable bills.

Enter the internet. Networks are putting free-to-air programming on their websites. This included taped feeds and some live programming. Networks usually don't stream their complete 24/7 programming. Some good stuff is available, though. For example, PBS (the Public Broadcasting Station) offer many of their documentaries for free over the net, and Comedy Central makes clips of The Daily Show available.

Channels like Court TV, E! and ESPN stream select live events, some taped programs, and fragments of programs like ESPN's Sports Center. These channels make their living through subscribers, not through advertisers, so most likely they'll never offer their complete programming online, except by subscription. And such subscriptions are not available yet.

HBO, Showtime and their like are premium subscription channels. Given the premium subscription prices, it isn't surprising that they offer very little of their original content online. However, you will find teasers and trailers, and even complete episodes from time to time. Don't expect to legally watch the complete run of The Wire online, though. As of this writing, these channels don't offer subscriptions over the internet.

The internet is full of ads for special software which enables you to watch TV series online free. Prices start at $39.95 and go upwards to around $99.95. In the state of California, Zinfandel is the number two most widely planted red wine grape. For many, many years, Zinfandel was a mystery grape, its origins unconfirmed. The latest DNA profiling from the University of California at Davis suggests that the grape actually originated in Croatia and not in the south of Italy, which was previously a common misconception. Continued research has shown that the possible original plantings migrated from Greece or even Albania.

Zinfandel arrived in the United States in the 1820's, when George Gibbs, a New York nurseryman, brought cuts from the Imperial Austrian plant species assortment. Throughout the following two decades, Zinfandel became a widespread table grape in North Eastern America. Although there is some controversy over the actual individual who first brought Zinfandel to the states, it has regardless been thriving since the middle of the nineteenth century.

Its popularity in the United States has lead Zinfandel to be referred to by the masses as the first true "California Red." Although California is the premier grower of Zinfandel, it is also widely grown in Italy as well.

It is a difficult grape to grow, due to the small, berry-like grapes that grow in tight clusters and ripen unevenly. Water management is essential in growing Zinfandel grapes--if these grapes do not get enough moisture, they will become stressed and will be more likely to raisin.

Zinfandel grapes however, are very resistant to vine disease and it is not uncommon for Zinfandel vineyards to be in existence for 75 or even 100 years. Wine connoisseurs believe that these "old vines" create the best wines because the older vineyards tend to be smaller, causing the grapes to ripen more evenly.

Zinfandels' preferable growing climate is in warm, coastal valleys, such as Dry Creek Valley, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Paso Robles.

Zinfandel varies in taste from light and fruity to intense and peppery. It is a common variety to blend with other grapes. At its ideal state, Zinfandel is fruity, with hints of raspberry, blackberry, boysenberry, cranberry, or black cherry. Common herbal tastes include briar, licorice, and nettle, while cinnamon and black pepper are both prevalent spices.

Depending on the region the grapes are grown in, the berry flavors will vary. Zinfandels produced in the Napa Valley tend to have hints of raspberry while warmer areas like Sonoma County will tend to have more of a strong blackberry flavor. The cooler the environment, the lighter and more fruity the grape will be.

A varietal best consumed within three to five years of the vintage, Zinfandel can become somewhat acidic and develop a higher alcohol level, leading it to have a "hot" taste if it isn't drank within five years of being bottled. Although typically Zinfandel is a hearty, red wine, in the United States a semi-sweet blush style wine known as "White Zinfandel" is also extremely popular

Recommended food pairings include outdoor grilled steaks, chops, or fruit stewed or stuffed meats. Zinfandels are not usually recommended for seafood and lighter tasting cuisines such as chicken, but more appropriately with full-bodied meats, potatoes, and pastas.

3-D Effects Take Audience on A Journey to the Center of the Earth (movie review)

Eric Brevigâ€™s first major film project, Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D is not the most innovative script nor is it filled with the most breath-taking acting, but the 3-D special effects he brings to the screen are so spectacular, that the decent plot and cast are hoisted above mediocre to make this new take on Verneâ€™s classic entertaining and exciting.

Brevig is not new to film-making despite this being his first mainstream presentation with his name at the top of directorâ€™s list. He has taken unit directorial roles on films such as Shaymaylanâ€™s The Village and the recent version of Wild Wild West starring Will Smith. Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D is not a straight forward unfolding of the Verne story and the directing, therefore, needed to take a new approach as well. Brevig did not have a lot with which to work, but he had enough to allow him to make the film a success.

The main cast was good enough, Brendan Fraser being the â€œbigâ€ name, and they accomplished what they needed to do; that being propel the story forward to make room for the special effects. There really is not much to say about the acting. It is sufficient and convincing enough for what it is. The writing is superficial at times and what do most audience members expect? Nothing more, I suspect. Most people are there to see things in depth and jump out of their seats when objects and creatures spring from the screen!

With that purpose in mind, no one will be disappointed by this film. Typical and expected 3-D effects are used and many simple objects usually overlooked in a film are given new attention through cinematographic choices enhancing the 3-D feel of the movie. The film uses the latest polarized glasses technique to make the illusion work and as long as the film is in focus, it works wondrously! Magical landscapes, unknown beasts, drastic and sudden movement, even a few classic fair-ride type thrills are thrown in just to keep the third dimension in the forefront of the viewersâ€™ minds. No time for worrying about the suspension of disbelief in this film: the plot, writing, and acting are all secondary to the optical fun that awaits the audience. Even most of the trailers where in 3-D, probably to get you ready for the film as much as to show off the effects for other upcoming 3-D movies.

Overall, Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D is fun and exciting for all. Nothing ridiculously scary or violent, while still holding the chills, thrills, and spills one hopes for in good 3-D film. The effect has come a long way since the original version of The Mask and The Thirteen Ghosts, Gorilla at Large, and the Kikaida Movie. Science at work, boys and girls, and that means entertainment galore! Bravo, Brevig! Journey is well worth experiencing on the big silver screen!

Michael Jackson is probably the world's greatest pop star. He's as famous as Elvis and only Elton John has sold more records than he, and no one has sold more copies of one record (Thriller) than he has. He's world renowned and a megastar in most countries and even now inspite of allegations of improprieties with children still has a huge fanbase. Few stars can boast of such a feat and fewer yet will ever achieve it. Yet this fame has come at a huge price and now this megastar, this once pop music juggernaut is in seclusion no one knows exactly where for he moves around quite a bit. After the trial that acquitted him of any wrongdoing he took off for a foreign land and stayed in the house of some prince or sheik (whatever) then he was off again to Ireland where purportedly he was looking at homes to buy, and finally in between appearances at trials for Civil Suits brought against him he finally landed in Vegas, so it is said. A quick trip to Japan where he was treated like the star he is and wants to be acknowledged as has been the only real public appearance he's made and he charged thousands of dollars to those who wanted to be in his presence for a few minutes. Since then, nothing else has happened save the lawsuits that constantly harangue him as he tries to hold on to his most prized possessions; Neverland Ranch (why I don't know), his music catalogues (The Beatles, Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament/Funkadelic) and most likely his sanity. How could so much go so wrong, I know he's asking himself and I must admit when I've nothing better to do I've pondered it myself. I mean, he had everything any man could possibly want, and yet he's had more trouble than any HUMAN could possibly deal with! WHAT WENT WRONG? Well my take on this may be a bit unflattering but trust you me, it's kind compared to what others have said about him. But basically, when you wanna' be a god instead of a man then you have to deal with godlike issues and one of those is rebellion of the masses.

I must say that at one time I worshipped the ground Michael Jackson walked on. I wanted to be him, I wanted to be like him, I wanted to be with him, I wished I was his brother, I would have been his pet dog just to be near him. He was perfect in every way to me and I absolutely adored him for it. But then things started to go wrong in paradise like when he had his first nose-job. I wondered why he did that for I felt there was nothing wrong with his appearance. Notwithstanding that at the time he STILL looked like a black man, so I forgave that. I didn't like him walking around with the monkey either but okay he can afford a monkey let him have one. Then he came out with his new cd 'Bad' and I noticed he was 100 shades lighter than he was on the cover of 'Thriller' (not my favorite album. I preferred 'Off the Wall') and then I knew something was wrong. Plus with another nose job and other things done (the cheeks, the chin, the eyes) my hero was starting to look like a sideshow FREAK! What happened to this beautiful black man who had been the pride of Afrocentric rebellion and strength? He had went Hollywood in the worst way and even beyond that; he turned his back on us and showed us how proud he was to be Black, NOT AT ALL! He wanted to be something else and it was reflected in the choices he had made in his professional and personal life. After realizing that,and it was a hard realization to come to, my hero became a big fat zero and I wasn't the only one. He has disappointed many people and thank God for one thing that didn't really change all that much; and that's the quality of his music. The music was still pretty good (though his attempts to transform himself into a rock star was ludicrous at best) and even his last CD 'Invincible' sold 9 million copies. He's got the chops and the fanbase to still be out making hit records. Even after the trial and all the accusations he's faced over being a pedophile (which I'm not sure what to make of. Who pays 20million dollars to somebody and they're innoccent?) he's still got tremendous support amongst the populace. If he put a record out today it would be no.1 by tomorrow and he could command a nice price for a world tour should he decide to do one. The only other thing he could do for me personally is to give back that Beatles song catalog to Paul McCartney. They were friends at one time and it was wrong of him to do that to a friend, even in bizness. Now maybe Paul would have done it to him had he the chance (maybe) but maybe not! He hasn't had that chance and then too business should never come before friendship. Eitherway, mayhaps one day Mike will sit down and review his life and look at his mistakes and learn that he's not a god nor the answer to the world's problems. He's just an R&B singer who's good at his job and that's all he should do.

The Inheritance Of Loss by Kiran Desai is a magnificent, impressive novel that ultimately is disappointing. As a process, the book is almost stunningly good. As a product, it falls short.

The book’s language, scenarios and juxtapositions are funny, threatening, vivid and tender all at the same time. The comic element, always riven through with irony, is most often to the fore, as characters grapple with a world much bigger than themselves, a world that only ever seems to admit them partially, and rarely on their own terms. The one criticism I have of the style is Kiran Desai’s propensity to offer up lists as comic devices, a technique that works a couple of times, but later has the reader scanning forward to the next substance.

An aged judge lives in the highlands of north India. As political and ethnic tensions stretch through the mountain air, he reconsiders his origins, his education, his career, his opportunities, both taken and missed. He has a granddaughter, orphaned in most unlikely circumstances, as her parents trained for a Russian space programme. But what circumstances that create orphans are ever likely? She is growing up, accompanied by most of what that entails.

The cook in the rickety mansion is the person that really runs the household, his rule-of-thumb methods predating the appliances he has to use and the services he has to provide. He manages, imaginatively. He has a son, Biju, who eventually forms the centrepiece of the book’s complex, somewhat rambling story. Biju has emigrated to New York, where he has made it big, at least as far as the folks back home think. On site, he slaves away in the dungeon kitchens of fast food outlets, restaurants, both up and downmarket, and a few plain eateries. Kiran Desai provides the reader with a superb image of globalisation when she describes the customer-receiving areas of an upmarket restaurant flying an advertised, authentic French flag, while in the kitchen the flags are Indian, Honduran, anything but French. Now there is true authenticity for you, offered up in its manufactured, globalised form.

Biju, of course, dreams of home, but the comparatively large number of US dollars he earns – at least as far as the folks back home see it – barely covers essentials in someone else’s reality.

The narrative of The Inheritance Of Loss flits between New York, northern India and elsewhere, and also between the here and now, yesteryear and the judge’s childhood. And perhaps it flits too much, because the scenes are often cut short before the reader feels they have made a point.

And ultimately this reader found that the book lacked focus. While the process was enjoyable, the product was not worth the journey. The Inheritance Of Loss seemed to promise to take us somewhere in this globalised confusion of identity, motive, routine, unrealised dreams and intangible desires, but eventually it seemed to have nothing to add to a sense of “well that’s how it is”, which is precisely where we started. There was an opportunity for more, but it was ducked.

The book was thus a thoroughly enjoyable read that threatened to achieve greatness through statement, but unfortunately missed the mark, and by a long way.
